Interview with Kerry Collins

Kerry Collins is the Senior Director of Community Relations at the Boston Bruins. Kerry shared a lot of useful information and advice that will help me with my internship/job searching journey. She stressed the importance of always sending a thank you card to someone you met with. This will show your appreciation towards them as well as help you stand out amongst other people. I learned that getting positions at smaller sport-related companies will help you get your foot in the door for a bigger company such as the Bruins. I learned that being personable is extremely important when trying to attain a position. Employers want to make sure that you are not only qualified for the position, but are also easy to work with and can hold a conversation. One final thing that I learned is that many positions involved with the Bruins sometimes requires late nights and long hours. You may have an event on Thursday, a late game on Friday, and another event on Saturday.

During my internship at Denterlein, an account director requested an urgent media list for a client's new restaurant opening. I needed to compile a list of at least seven different reporters from different publications that we could contact in hopes of them reporting on the opening. I created a Google Spreadsheet to organize the list of reporters, their contact information, and their publication. I searched through various publications such as the Boston Globe and Boston.com to find specific reporters that specialize in restaurant openings. I searched reporters on LinkedIn to double check that they were still with the publication or still specialize in restaurants. I emailed the completed media list to the account director before the end of the day and he was able to contact reporters that were fit to report on our client's new restaurant opening.

2) Compile a list of reasonable, potential companies to intern at next year.

Katelyn Otis was a Media Planner at Amp, a marketing agency in Boston. She recently started a new position in sales at the security company ADT, but she was able to provide me with information about her position at Amp. Katelyn's day-to-day at Amp was always different. She developed media plans for about four clients after gathering research to provide strategic consumer insight driven media recommendations. She led the process of inputting buys, contracts, and negotiations before trafficking for channels while ensuring proper campaign execution. She monitored budget pacing and KPI performance to make sure insights were derived and goals were exceeded. She made sure to build strong, positive, and trustworthy relationships internally and externally with agency partners and clients. Finally, she coordinated monthly Lunch and Learns with vendors to educate departments on offerings and client opportunities.
