James Armistead was a black slave that became a spy. First, Armistead got permission from his master or owner to go and fight for the colonies. Then, he Infuriated Charles Cornwallis’s camp by posing as a runaway slave loyal to the British. He proved so convincing in the undercover role, that Cornwallis eventually enlisted him to work as a British spy. Then he was a full on spy. Finally, James gave phony information supplied by Lafayette, including a fraudulent report that referenced nonexistent units of Continental troops. This is why James Armistead was a great spy.

Enoch Crosby was not a real spy at first but was actual just a shoemaker. First, he was mistaken for a British sympathizer and he played along with it. Next, he reported to John Jay with lots of good information. Finally, he was discharged and hailed as a hero in 1777 and even his parents did not about his secret job. That is how few of people knew about it out side of John Jay. That is why in the end, Enoch Crosby was a great spy.
