As a Literature teacher, I could organize reading activities based on texts concerning social inclusion or exclusion (integration of disabled people in work environments, racial segregation in the USA etc..). In my classroom, I take a moment on fridays to the "Cheers and thanks". Here the students think about their week and can compliment or thank a classmate for something they did. It is a beautiful moment because they can be grateful for small things.

In a generation that is full of selfies, self-love, and selfishness, the significance of empathy in the classroom is greater than ever before. Compounded by the isolation of a pandemic and a lack of community, students need adults who are keenly aware of the provocative emotion triggered by traumatic circumstances. Strong models of empathy should be expected from our educators and mimicked by our students. Demonstrating empathy in the classroom allows teachers to recognise the feelings of their students and themselves without lowering expectations. Empathy is the highest of knowledge because the perspective shifts from the ego to others and we can operate as a learning community.

From my experience as a class teacher, I can say that I always try to make students be more empathic with their colleagues and with other people. I try to give examples from real life, using short videos or telling stories from my days as a student, I also use roleplay as a strategy to enhance empathy and I engage students in activities such as: fundraising or food/ clothing/personal hygiene items collection to help people in need.

As a classteacher in primaryschool it is important to let the parents know about the situation of the whole class and that I believe in the power of communication and collaboration of all persons belonging to our classcommunity. I will start giving an example of emphaty that change my vision about it. One day a orphan child gived his food to another children from a very poor family. I need to say also that the orphan child have only 3 meals on a day. We learn to give, to share. To share things that others needs most. We also learn how to share emotions using icons. I specify that I'm a psychologist working with special needs children's.

I always have very strict rules about the communication between students. No mocking, bullying and inappropriate behavior is allowed. When it occurs that students find themselves in situations like that, I always have a talk and get them to understand what happened. They always work things out between them.
I also participate with my students in various role-plays, international projects. Actually, I am working on one of my own projects right now that will include empathy and mindfulness.

In the classroom, we discuss various topics related to the development of empathy during music education. For example humanitarian concerts through the song We are the world and the life of M. Jackson, humanitarian concerts (we remember the recent earthquake in Petrinja, children of Ukraine, Syria, etc.), we talk about sign language listening to bands that play and are deaf, as well as L. van Beethoven. We develop discussions on such and similar topics. We learn sign language and talk about true friendship through current topics and songs.

In my kindergarten class, I believe that the best way to develop empathy is to model empathy, communicating in a way that we feel connected. I usually share some difficulties I've overcome as a child as well as we debate the feelings of characters we meet on fairy tales (I tell a story to the group every day). I believe that I'm able to create a safe environment where children can share their feelings and their needs because it's the base of my curriculum. We also collaborate in etwinning projects, both locally and internationally, creating the possibility to connect with other cultures and social groups. Last school year, when kids heard that there was a war starting in Ukraine and that our etwinning partners lived very close as we could see on the map, they showed concern and empathy in a way I could never imagine. Schools have the power to model empathetic citizens and in consequence to create a better world for the future.

There was a case during my lesson. A 12 year old girl did not want to collaborate with other classmates. She usually said 'I want to work alone' . Also she did not want to help anyone.At the same time she complained that nobody wants to be her friend. There were difficul tasks, group works etc. She was not able to do everything alone and became nervous and irritated. So I decided to show her that working together and helping others is rewarding and neccessary/crucial while learnig/being in the classroom. I asked her to help me and move a very heavy table. I wanted her to asker for help.
She was trying to move it alone , but couldn't. After a while she called for help. Also at the beginning nobody wanted to help her, but then one by one the whole class came to help. Not in the next lesson, but gradually the situation changed. Now she is two years older and has friends, also works in pairs and groups.
