Syrian Christians, also known as Saint Thomas Christians or Syriac Christians, are a religious group found in the Indian state of Kerala, located on the western coast of the peninsula. The group's origins come from Thomas the Apostle, who travelled to what is now in the Kerala province in 52 CE. Being surrounded by the much larger Hindu population, Syrian Christians have taken inspiration from various Hindu practices and tenets to build their own belief system. They subscribe to the caste system, and are considered to be an upper caste community. Though there has been historical tension between the Christians and other members of the upper caste, modern relations are much stronger and Syrian Christians occupy many important roles in communities like bankers and merchants.

Communism in Kerala began in 1939 when resisting against the British rule and the opposition of the caste rule. The communists competed in elections, sometimes winning.

Today, the communist party in Kerala does not represent the Marxist ideology for many young followers but equal opportunity. This creates conflict within the group due to the uncertainty of their communist parties ideas and direction for the future
