What is your reaction when you see these kinds of architecture? When anyone sees any kind of architecture, he or she must remember that form and function are present in any design of the structure. Louis Sullivan (a modern architect) stated that "Form follows Function." This statement is true because without the form and/or the function, it will be difficult for all of us to understand the purpose of the architecture. The apprentice of Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, stated that “Form and Function are One.” This shows that with form and function, we can understand the reason for any architect to creating these structures around the world. Since form and function become as one, it shows that there must be or there is an order that makes the architecture standout to the public. With order, this means that there are elements that distinguish the structure. Elements are needed in architecture so that people can understand its history or background because these elements trace back to the time the structure was made. Since there is background involved, it makes helps people appreciate the architecture not just though the form and function but through the trace of the elements. It is important to note that without the form the function is useless because without these, it would show that the architect create the structure out of nothing which makes either the form or function useless. Always remember that architects create architecture with a purpose using the form and function to show how beautiful the structure is to the human eye. This chapel is popular for its interior because the frescoes were painted by Michelangelo a well-known influence in the humanities during the Renaissance. Until this current time, people around the world go to the Vatican to appreciate this architecture and other structures created by the architects during the Renaissance. To understand better on the beauty of the Sistine Chapel, it is important to know its form and function. There is always a purpose to why this chapel still stands out to the human eye until this day. 


To begin with the exterior of the Sistine Chapel, it appears rectangular and it does not look massive compared to the other structures present in the Vatican. Notice that the outer walls have arched windows which brings back the idea of the ancient Romans because they were the first ones to introduce the arch in their architecture. Applying arched windows during the Renaissance proves that the period is known to revive art during the ancient times such as Greek and Roman architecture. This makes sense during the Renaissance because these people wanted to revive the whole humanities through the innovation in art, architecture, painting, sculpture, philosophy, literature and more subjects in the humanities. Reviving the use of the arch makes us appreciate the structure’s beauty because of its history and heritage. Even though the design structure may look plain, the structure denotes to a period where the humanities needed to be revived.


The main reason why the Sistine Chapel is appreciated until this day is because of its interior which was mainly deigned by Michelangelo. It is not just the architect that the people are after, it is his work that inspired others to create religious art and make others appreciate the structures. Going inside the interior of the structure is catching to the human eye because of the frescoes which present the stories of Christ’s ancestors, saints, the life of Christ, the Creation, and more stories in the Holy Bible. These are spectacular because Michelangelo was able to manage the spacing of each fresco using borders in a chapel. With the borders of each work comes in different shapes which are rectangles, arches and triangles. These designs appear in an orderly fashion and each border is based depending on the story. Another point to show the appreciation is the use of mosaic on the flooring of the chapel. Mosaic began during the time of Mesopotamia which is way before the Roman and Greek period. This shows that the Sistine Chapel helped the revival humanities using architecture and makes people appreciate the structure because of the elements used to make the structure's form and function as one.
