Inquiry Process

It is very important for students follow the inquiry process as a means of starting to first research into the topic, then expanding their research to gain a more extensive understanding. As students become more and more knowledgeable, they are then able to begin making connections with themselves and with the real world. As they move through each part of the inquiry process, they are able to build upon their knowledge. Eventually, students are able to reflect upon how they can take action in the real world and make a difference. If we were to only tell students to go out and research as much as they can about the chosen topic, this would only be a research project with not much thought or deep connections put into it.

Conceptual Learning

One of the most vital ways to learn, is for one to make sense of their own learning, in the way that makes sense to him/her. As educators, it is important for us to present opportunities for students succeed and encourage students to experiment with different materials and concepts, in order for them to draw their own conclusions as well as their own understanding. Conceptual learning allows students to become challenged in their thinking and to be open minded to explore different strategies.

International Mindedness

This is essential in the exhibition process because students must be eventually willing to act on their thoughts after they become more aware of a current world issue. This is especially applicable in IB schools were we are teaching about learner profiles and become more open minded citizens of the world. As we go through each UOI and explore more about certain topics and really allow students to dig deep with their thinking and question the things that are happening around the world, they are able to go out into the world and be able to put their thought process to action. They are able to act on what it means to be a risk taker and open minded towards people of a different race, ethnicity, culture or gender. They are able to accept others for who they are.
