It became a new genre of music that happened to be very popular. It was a mix between instrumental ragtime and vocal blues. In 1922 Louis Armstrong, a African American trumpet player, joined a jazz band called the Creole Jazz band. He then became very popular due to his intricate trumpet playing and his ability to improvise as well. He then joined another band in 1924 called the Fletcher Henderson band which was one of the biggest bands in the city. Armstrong set a high bar for every band across the states. As a result of Armstrongs success jazz had become the most popular genre of music for dancing.
