The first newspaper being invented in 1605 within Europe. These news papers where produced by hand back then. And how the news was consumed was only to a small number of subscribers to the company, and not the general public. 
But later on the Newspapers were produced in prints. Enabling more to be made and distributed. The way production was during this time was that journalist were in the front line. Meaning they could have been in constant danger.

What this means is that each media company who produced and distributed the news were untouchable. People back then would only consume the news passively. The way this is change consumption of news is that the web will only show you news that you will find interesting. In the 1990's the first mobile phone with internet connectivity was invented. And the internet and phone continued to develop.
Now people are able to contribute with the news, this is known as Web 2.0. An example would be citizen journalism. People can now produce their own news: filming an accident. Then distribute it online on their own without the use of big media companies. E.g. YouTube.

This is because now there are more than one easily accessible platform to watch news. For example websites and social media, both that can be accessed on portable mobile phones. This is an advantage for people who are unable to watch at scheduled times e.g. radio and TV. And phones are less hassle to carry around compared to newspaper.

Also internet consumption means that the news can be reached to anyone on the internet. In 2015, the International Telecommunication Union estimated about 3.2 billion people, or almost half of the world's population, would be online by the end of the year. This means that the internet would reach more people compared to previous platforms.
