It's purpose was to patrol African American neighborhoods to protect residents from acts of police brutality. Its peak was in the 1960s when several major cities joined in this party. In 1967 Newton was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the death of a police officer. He was released from prison and later in 1974 he was accused of yet another murder and fled to Cuba for 3 years before facing charges. He died in 1989.

After hearing Malcolm X speak, his radicalism began. He went to prison for 4 years for 16 counts of contempt. After his release from prison, he wrote a few books and later died in around 1988.

August 19, 1969: Seale is arrested in Berkeley on charges of inciting a riot but gets bail. He spends time in jail for 21 months
