The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 or the Hungarian Uprising of 1956 was a nationwide revolt against the communist government of the Hungarian People's Republic and its Soviet-imposed policies, lasting from 23 October until 10 November 1956. Inaction on the part of the United States angered and frustrated many Hungarians. Voice of America radio broadcasts and speeches by President Dwight D, Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dullies had recently suggested that the United States supported the “liberation” of “captive peoples” in communist nations. Yet, as Soviet tanks bore down on the protesters, the United States did nothing beyond issuing public statements of sympathy for their plight.

In 1950, President Harry S. Truman announced work on the hydrogen bomb was to continue. A prime example of brinkmanship during the Cold War was the Cuban Missile Crisis. The US and the USSR, each armed with nuclear weapons, and both practiced brinkmanship during this conflict. The United States detonated the world's first thermonuclear weapon, the hydrogen bomb, on Eniwetok atoll in the Pacific.
