The museum has a large collection of artifacts related to the transatlantic slave trade and how it shaped the African continent and the European countries involved (England, Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Holland).
Throughout the last several centuries, the African continent has undergone transformations. The exhibition includes installations demonstrating the lives of some tribes, their traditions, customs, textiles, musical instruments, and their spiritual and ancestral ties. It attempts to explain how Africa was exploited, how Europeans used their rigid concepts of civilization to justify the abuse and manipulation of Africans; Provides a parallel to the many exploits of the African diaspora and their struggle against racism and shaping their identity (Woodrow Wilson, 1912).

The museum comprehends with objects from African tribes, a view of the trans Atlantic expeditions, and works of numerous contemporary artists and collaborations, using materials and themes that relate to the experience of slavery and the loss and lack of right of enslaved people.
Through the various forms of racism and discrimination and the formation of important groups such as Black Lives Matter, Black Power, and the Black Panther Movement, the African diaspora has been impacted by this traumatic history and continues to do so today.

Andy Warhol was the leader of the 1960s Pop Art avant-garde movement and one of the most acclaimed artists of the 20th century. Starting as a commercial illustrator, he initiated controversial and necessary discussions about the value of fine versus commercial art as a multidisciplinary artist.
A pop culture lover, Warhol was obsessed with advertising, celebrities, and consumer goods, depicting everyday subjects to tell the story of America at the time.

In his artistic career, the ‘70s are known for his renewed interest in social events and portraits, moving progressively away from his commercial subject matter. In Warhol's iconic Myths series, he depicts famous fictional characters like Dracula and Superman from American history, film, and culture.

It is this interest in appropriating pop culture and Warhol's trivial things that I am exploring in my project, reinterpreting images that already exist and giving them a new meaning.

In order to gain a better understanding of which images to use, I should also explore how can I represent represent something through objects or images looking at a historical archive or old films.

In this case, the work relates to an event that was erased and manipulated, even though it had been documented. In 1970, she joined her friend, the trans activist Silvia Rivera, in founding Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) to fight for the rights of transgender and queer youth. She was also an HIV-positive organizer with ACT UP, and an important figure in the Stonewall Riots. That same year, she helped organize the first-ever Gay Pride March.

Andy Warhol’s silkscreen print series Ladies and Gentlemen from 1975 depicts the 70s New York trans and drag queens' community.

The series was commissioned by an Italian art dealer, Luciano Anselmino, who suggested Warhol a series of anonymous pictures to represent this community. During this time, they boldly embraced their sexuality, being well-known members of the gay and trans’ New York scene.

The subject, New York Black and Latinx trans women and drag queens, were recruited by Warhol’s friends, many from a bar on Manhattan’s 8th Avenue. At the time (and still today), transgender communities were at severe risk of various forms of discrimination, poverty, and violence. Significantly, when Warhol’s series was first shown, he did not identify his subjects by their names, effectively objectifying them as “other.”
He took a initial Polaroid photoshoot of over 500 photographs of 14 models. He often selected through the Polaroids of the sitter to find ones that worked well with other processes. A selection of them were then enlarged onto screen prints (silkscreen).

These people were not so well known to the world and for decades they stayed unlabeled and unidentified; it took till 2014 to uncover some of their identities and names. Hopefully, during the photoshoot some of the models signed off their photos and today we can identify thirteen of the fourteen depicted women.

Reflections about Andy Warhol's work with Screen print

For me, it is interesting how Warhol appropriate his characters’ image to give them another layer of meaning and interpretation. With screen-printing I want to create different types of prints, manipulating the image, colour and shapes to have unique prints that make possible to end with different interpretations.

- It can be seen how he created a contradiction to depict this figures, since he was known to work exclusively with famous and celebrities. He turns these depicted characters famous, bringing an awareness about the existence of these marginalized people and show them to the viewer.

- The purpose of the screenprint was exactly the same: to appropriate old photographs of African women and to give a new meaning to their representation and give a new symbology to their characters as a result of the colors used and the supports used.

- Enhance the significance of the represented figure.

- Andy Warhol is always aware of how art can be easily sold and the way his work is done in serialization. As a result, his works are not unique, but have a connection to mass manufacturing products for sale (consumerism).

- Reflecting about Warhol's technique, I intend to appropriate images in a way that also brings attention to those who have been subjected to atrocities in the past, and confront the viewer with the racism and discrimination that still exists toward black people today. Throughout history, Black women have been oppressed by race, gender, and class for too long.

- Warhol used the same processes to portrayed celebrities and other famous people (Photography and Screen-print). None of the subjects were famous but Warhol gave them freedom to pose and to dress as they wish, portraying them with style and glamour.

- The desire of Andy is to create art that can be easily sold and easily serialized. He develops his artistic practice in a way that allows it to be unique while making it simple for him to fabricate his work in mass and make it accessible to the public.

- He took their portraits with a Polaroid Big Shot camera and then transferred the image onto screen-print.

- The typical Warhol’s process of screen-print technique reflect not just the appearance and reality of his subjects but it adds colour and life into the composition, using bold blocks of paint. His intention was to depict the elegance and sexiness of these community, presenting them as they are into their community, removing them for their difficult realities.

Carrie Mae Weems is an African-American visual artist who combines a complex dialogue with photography, audio, video, text, textile and installations to examine History and the many aspects of American life.

First inspired for other Black American documentary photographers, as Roy DeCarava, she saw the ability to bring the present positive and realistic images of African American culture.

Through his practice, she is mainly interested in themes related to race, gender and class issues, such as racism in Black American life, and police brutality and violence against Black communities, that led her to work with public engagement projects.

Very often she give space to the black experience through her works, expressing concerns about the exclusion of images of the black community, specially the black women, from the media.

She intends to let herself and her audience immerse themselves in the work's subject. As a result of the work's very strong political convictions, neither she nor the audience are forced into the work, but they are allowed to locate themselves within their own ideas and relationships with the work.

Carrie Mae artist's constant conversation about the historical exclusion in her artworks is what inspire me to gain the knowledge of oppression of my predecessors and expose injustices of our Society as an artist, and have the capacity to educate other people through History and empower the next generation.

The work she has created has been an inspiration for institutions to include marginalized voices, and ultimately she envisions a future in which art is enriched by the diversity of its participants.

My intention is to challenge stereotypes about race and gender using the image of the Black woman having a similar approach as the artist that confronts the viewer with powerful works mixing photography, video, and installation.

Besides preparing a taxonomy of slave physical types, Agassiz intended to use these portraits as visual evidence to support his theories regarding racial inferiority.

In viewing these images, Weems suggests, we see Anglo Americans' relationship with black people. She wants to intervene in that process by giving voice to an oppressed community.

Combining photography and text, Carrie Mae Weems explores the notion of a narrative that runs across her entire work, with images that lay out very specific development of history – Black American History within Photographic History in USA.

The text was added on the glass metaphorically creating a distance to original photograph, according to the artist, making clear that something was taken or lifted. She brings these concepts through the use of different textures, colours and surfaces, relating the subject with the form. These some of the many abilities that I wish to explore as well and ultimately achieve.

The use of colour is important to give this sense or creation of duality of reality and non-reality. The figures show a presence of humanity into the composition although the colours that she uses they are not the same as we can see in real life. The natural colours that she inserts; she dislocates the individuals and relocate them into a artificial space.
She wants to invite the viewers to “believe in the constructed spaces and scenes, the artifice of their construction is made evident.”

I also find interesting in the way that each print will be unique and a bit different from each other, due to the way the ink was applied into the plate or even how it was printed.

Hints of narrative trigger associations which may lead in different directions. Often photographic representation and figuration are used to encourage connection with the illusory space in the work. In some instances the illusion is further developed as an immersive installation. Processes reflect the conceptual basis of the work.

And we should have this conversation in court, I think it will instructive for any number of reasons and certainly for artists that are really engaged in the act of appropriation, who think that there is a larger story to tell.”

Influenced by social theorists such as Stuart Hall and Homi Bhabha, their work explored new dialogues about black identity/culture within the British society and creating new narratives in British cinema.

His multi-screen film installations and accompanying photographic works that incorporates different artistic disciplines, creates an unique visual language and poetic, with fractured narratives of memory and desire.

Julien's open-ended narratives propose that spectators actively interpret the work through a physical and sensorial immersion.

"Due to the nature of my practice," the artist has stated, "I do not produce my films using a standard filmic construction, which is mainly grounded in scriptwriting. I often work on multiple screens, which demands a montage technique specially developed for that purpose. I pay great attention to set décor, lighting, performance, mise-en-scène, as well as editing, sonic, and visual effects to create a space for meditation on political and cultural questions."

Looking for Langston as a poetic documentary about the life of poet, novelist and playwright Langston Hughes (1902 – 1967) and other African American artists who formed the Harlem Renaissance during the 20s.

The film is arranged from his own footage, imagined scenes and dream sequences, and archive footage, tracing the relation between Hughes and Beauty, the object of his desire.

It is a black and white film with multi-layered narratives recreating the poet’s private life, being a landmark for Cinema in the exploration of the black queer gaze and desire, that was expanded in some scene’s shots of the actual footage within Julien’s photographic work. It addresses daily struggles faced by queer community of colour that it is still present nowadays. The film has no connotations with time or place, although it is still an important way for the Black gay community be seen, since it was made at the height of the AIDS pandemic in the 80s. It created a conversation between the independent film and queer cinema, becoming a landmark for a new genre – New Queer Cinema.

Julien works with his own archive and revisited questions around Black Lives Matter and Black queer visibility and see how it is still important to still work around the same projects and make it visible to other generations. It can be seen on how these same concepts have become both mainstreamed and at the same time there is a lot of antagonism.

Julien piece works with a concept that can be a taboo” or not seen in some communities. Although, associating this same concepts with Black Lives Matter, or the notion of Black Queer visibility, it must be seen that some of these have become both mainstreamed and at the same time there is loads of antagonism. Something that can be seen and understood to everybody. It pretends to be inclusive and accepted.

It is fascinating the way Julien works with history, identity and some other concepts that are still present in nowadays (prejudice and discrimination), blending real characters with fictional ones. The construction of a poetic narrative within the movie creates an easy way of the concept be easily perceived.

He opens awareness about something that is still a problem nowadays, creating a conversation on how HIV infection and AIDS created terrible ramifications within the Black communities. That is my same approach with my work, appropriating of videos, films and documentaries to relate the Black Woman Experience as a whole.

Things I am interested:

-Creation of such a narrative that cause impact in the viewer because of the image. Being intimate and scenes of private nature, it provokes the viewer.

-He creates a vehicle which someone can be seen and visible, which became a touchstone for African-American Studies.

- It transgress the way the subject is viewed and seen.

-The focus in one character to exemplified and glorify one concept.

-The black and white aspect that increments a sense of old aspect and imagination

-The voice over that was added, in order to have a sense of temporality and

-Sequential shots to create a narrative

Jafa's practice includes films, photography, artifacts, and happenings that question the universal alienation and the beauty of contemporary Black culture.

Jaffa questions the hybridity of these images and Black music, whether or not they were produced by Black Americans. He extends the practice of the visual media, with objects, static and moving images, to transmit the equivalent “power, beauty and alienation” embedded within forms of Black music in US culture.

The research into black culture led him to produce more than two hundred notebooks with images and stills, using them as sketches for his works. As it can be seen in the image, for Jafa these images reflect on a wider way to make the Black experience more visible to the World. Incorporating a visual hypothesis and subjectivity into the montage of these images to define a Black Aesthetic.

His video works help black film capture the same kind of action that black music had developed through its cultural prestige; using film to communicate Blackness as a visual art form as same way that music did.

Yinka Shonibare's The British Library presents extensive research about immigration and British diversity. It is an installation consisted of three walls and shelves with over six thousand hardback books covered in the artist’s signature African wax fabric. Names of notable first and second generations of immigrants and migrants as well as those opposed to immigration are printed in gold leaf on the spines of 2700 books. The list of names ranges from Prince Philip, who is listed as being born in Greece, Winston Churchill (American mother) and Stuart Hall (born in Jamaica). Other books have no name on it, “suggesting (…) that the story of British immigration is still unwritten.” (Brown, 2019)

During 1942, Gordon Parks' photographs of Ella Watson provided rare exposure to a black female subject who was not a celebrity or entertainer, but a mother and a worker.
This is probably Parks' most recognizable image and depicts an African-American woman named Ella Watson, who was a government cleaner.
As he captures the daily life of one woman, he reveals the hardships associated with someone who works incessantly to provide for her family.
The photograph reveals the simplicity and modesty of the life of this person and her family.

By depicting her daily life with her grandchildren, the photographer describes her matriarchal and nurturing character. Her devotional imagery and the picture of her worships in her home serve as evidence of her strong religious beliefs.

These images are important to me, since they depict the Black community and experience collectively. Even in different countries, we still adhere to the same traditions and habits.

My project is strongly inspired by these photos, which gives me more confidence to present a debate about how black women were treated, and consequently relating to the prejudice and racism still prevalent in present society.

They include the idea that gender, race, class, and other categories of difference are historical, cultural constructs rather than immutable truths. The history of these concepts is connected. Race and gender, for instance, have an intertwined history.
Hence, feminist theory and action aims to unravel these tangled hierarchies and expose the injustice of these constructions so that a more just world may be created.

Ja’Tovia Gary is an African American multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker, working with sculpture, installation and experimental video.

Gary is deeply concerned with re-memory and rigorously interrogating and re-appreciating the archive.
In her art, she asserts a Black feminist subjectivity, challenging notions of objectivity and neutrality in nonfiction storytelling, while at the same time applying what scholars and cultural critics call the “oppositional gaze” as a maker as well as a critical spectator for moving picture works.

Gary's works expose power's influence on reality in an intimate and often personal manner. As reparative gestures for distorted histories of Black life, Gary's films and installations provide a glimpse into the lives of Black people. Gary’s multivalent works often focus on Black sociality, familial bonds, Black women, and global liberation efforts.
A key focus of Gary's work is how structures of power shape the way we perceive representation, race, gender, sexuality, and violence. In her work, she strives to reclaim Black life from the distorted histories it is often subjected to, while fleshing out a nuanced and multivalent Black interiority.

Ja'Tovia creates a multi-layered cinematic poem about the safety and physical integrity of Black women. The video is a set of edited interviews with women on the street, combined with direct animation from archives.

The film explores the paradoxes of black female performers figures (Nina Simone, Josephine Baker) whose bodies serve as spaces of forced labor and commodified production despite filming between Harlem streets (USA) and Manet's historical gardens in Giverny (France). To get their perspective on what it is like to be a black woman and how safe they feel, she interviewed these women.

It was JaTovia's juxtaposition of the videos that caught my attention. In the end, there are multiple videos from different sources that are interconnected with other more abstract and animations, which creates an lyrical visual narrative that reflects the insecurity and fear of black women's body.

This shows us how women feel about being alone in some environments, the apparent gender difference, and how they struggle as women on a daily basis.
It is interesting how some of the women still address the impact of the media and how much pressure it can cause to them.

- She could only use her experience as a Black Woman, but she feels she must combine it with other Black women's experiences.

- Through music, viewers are guided to feel what they're seeing, where images change and build depending on the tone of the music.

With the video edition, Ja'Tovia invokes mixed feelings of provocation and serenity. Some of her images suggest more peaceful, day-to-day scenes, outdoor scenes in the garden; distressed images and abstract forms in her animated iterations.

- These are some key aspects that I should be mindful of in order to have black women's perspective and experience on my work.

I enjoy the way she edits her own films, putting together videos, images, and sounds to build a narrative. Her over-tonal montage and metric continuity in her work engages the viewers' attention and confronts them with disparate images instead of just one.

- This is a dialectical construction that she creates and it is something I wish to follow with my montage, in that I wish to create meaning and engage the viewer into my work.

Adrian Piper is a conceptual artist, art critic, philosopher and educator, that since the 60’s her art has been a powerful medium for raising critical awareness. What made me curious about her work is the way she confronts the viewer and connects to the she views at our Society with the way we experience the activity to see an artwork and also be on a gallery space.

Adrian Piper describes her art as a catalyst for change in a creative practice as a tool for political resistance. Often using herself as both object and object of her work she transforms her own body and physical presence into a site for critical intervention challenging essentialist to engage the viewer about notions about race, gender and identity.

It is also my intention to also engage the viewer with the installation in the same approach as Piper does, creating a conversational space and a space where are my work can gain another meaning.

Cornered is a video installation where the artists canalizes her own ideals about moral, social and political complexities of racial determination.

The artwork it is positioned in a corner with behind a upturned table as a defence, with her father’s two birth certificates—one that identifies him as white, the other as black. While the artist speaks through a video directly to the viewer.

This conceptual piece inspires me on how art can be a tool of communication, to address issues of race, class gender and identity, and think about how the gallery space can be a space of inclusion. It can reflects how misogyny, racism and oppression controlled the main institutions of our Society, being this the key elements for my project.

The video draws the viewer’s attention to his/her own biases and brings. She is having a conversation about race and she uses the television and the gallery as a metaphor for conversation.
Cornered is configured or highlighted in a way that represents an architecture of power, by the way the artwork is protecting itself for exposing the artist’s truth.
Her broader critique of social and culturally entrenched institutions is underlined by this subtle and conscious orchestration of space.

Since my project consists in different artistic elements, an installation can be an engaging approach to have all my pieces together to create a narrative and connect the viewers to it.

These installations memorialize unknown persons at the same time that they raise questions about the veracity of the photographic medium.

Using appropriated images and mundane objects, Boltanski follows the tradition initiated in Paris in 1913 by the iconoclast Marcel Duchamp, who abandoned the conventional tools of art by using a bicycle wheel for his first ready-made sculpture.

Breaking down the barrier between life and art culminated with Andy Warhol, the Pop Art master who transformed journalistic photographs of movie stars as well as anonymous accident victims into cool but dazzling silk screens. Ligon reveals how slavery, the civil rights movement, and sexual politics shape our understanding of American society.
He is interested in the idea that words can be affective and evidently inhabited by their reader. While literature is often autobiographical, written language leaves space for diverse readers to embody and resonate with it.

Glenn Ligon is best known for powerful text-based paintings and lightworks that offer challenging messages about Black identity and queerness in America. The artist often references African American thinkers including James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, Zora Neale Hurston, and Richard Pryor.

Taking advantage of the textures achievable with etching and aquatint techniques, Ligon here creates two black-on-white and two black-on-black prints whose dense layers and deliberate smudges visualize themes of legibility and illegibility, prominence and erasure, and blackness and whiteness. The words, which are either highlighted or obscured, quote works by two renowned African American writers: Zora Neale Hurston’s 1928 essay "How it Feels to Be Colored Me" and Ralph Ellison’s 1952 novel Invisible Man. In the viewer’s efforts to read the texts, Ligon signals the struggles of African Americans to claim agency and voice in white America.

"Lambeaux" is a fantasized diary deconstructed from disparate elements, where the personal and the collective mingle. A moving journal, a Creole memory, not in the geographic sense but a spiritual one. Philosopher Edouard Glissant's concept of creolization is a memory born of elements heterogeneous to each other "meeting in a given place and time." (Glissant, Poetics of Relation, 1990)

Gilles Elie-Dit-Cosaque develops a pictorial work based on collage entitled "Lambeaux" (Scraps), which involves memory report and negritude (an anti-colonial cultural and political movement reclaiming the value of Blackness). An exercise whose scratches and repairs, tells the creolization of the world, without hiding its painful side.

Francois Piquet is a French artist who lives and works in Guadeloupe. His artworks focus on creolisation, approaches to identity, slavery and social relationships in the post-colonial world. Piquet wants to bring art back to its social function and make his work accessible. His motto is "Art is for and by everyone possible, foreseeable, enviable and beneficial."

In "Timalle" (small male), a tortured gesture of bonding a body is re-enacted through sculpture and performance. Piquet engages in a process of repairing the world by dealing with racial issues, slavery, colonial and post-colonial heritage. Through this work, Piquet connects the present and past with Caribbean traumas.
This work incorporates themes such as "Other," "Skin," "Identity," historical stigmata, Rooting, and Repairing.

Reflections:
- The artist takes the concept of dehumanization and slavery and constructs a sculpture using found elements that are unlikely to be found on a sculpture normally.
Seeing a figure like that represented like that in space was unusual for me, but it still managed to have its intended impact.

As a result of the combination of performance, video and sculpture, the viewer is able to make assumptions and connections about how the artist was able to make the work. I found red to be more meaningful and able to draw more attention, demonstrating human suffering.

This work is a culmination of a research of the artist Khaleb Brooks about on the Middle Passage at the International Slavery Museum archives.

A central theme of the artist's research is slavery, remembrance, and legacy. As a means of presenting the gruesome truth of individual narratives and recording the lives of enslaved people, Brooks draws connections between the legacy of slavery and the ongoing fight for black rights. Considering the relationship between black life and black death as well as the sinister relationship with an enslaved person and commodified objects, the artist disrupt the archive through the acknowledgment of individual lives.

The installation consists of nine cowrie shell sculptures, tapestries, and a collaborative video.
Brook was able to identify 9 people enslaved by mention of their death which mostly occurring during insurrections. The 9 resin cowrie sculptures pay homage to these individuals. The two tapestries are digital collages including open access archival images, Brooks' personal notes while researching, text from the archive and rare images of black sailors. The collaborative video offers a movement response to the physical works drawing cross-cultural connections between South Africa and the UK.

The unveiling of artefacts, and the objects used in slavery are hugely important. Khaleb hopes to reimagine these objects in a positive and from a place of empowerment.

Veronica Ryan is a visual artist who creates sculptural objects and installations using containers, compartments, and combinations of natural and fabricated forms to reference displacement, fragmentation and alienation.

Her practice questions structures of meaning and intention, thinking about the kinds of things on she is making, and why she is working with certain materials.
Through sculptural objects and assemblages of found materials, her works explore psychological associations and engage with residues, traces, memories, deposits.
In her work, she explores contradictions and paradoxes that speak to wider culture and prompt the viewer to think about their relationship with them. In her unique sculptures, she emphasizes the link between organic shapes and historical networks of commercial exchange, including human and agricultural producers, as well as the cycles of death and rebirth, environmental breakdown, and intergenerational exchange that occur.

- My attention was drawn to the simplicity and ordinality of the sculptures, which due to their ambiguity can be understood in a multitude of ways or be hard to relate to.
Veronica's work can be seen as a response to globalization, consumption, how these simple objects may have no value in our homes but become more valuable as art objects.

It was very important to me to see Ingrid Pollard's artwork in this exhibition since her work is one of my primary inspirations. As a pioneer in the use of photography in contemporary social practice, she explores the social and cultural constructs that underlie race, identity, community and gender.
Her artwork is thematically displayed, showing how she often embed herself in communities for long periods of research, she incorporates both digital and analogue processes, sculptures and images presented on a wide rage of materials.

In 1855, José Christiano Jr. immigrated to Brazil and established himself in Maceió as a photographer. His studio portraits portrayed Africans, slaves or freedmen, focusing on their facial features or simulating their professional activities. A lack of interest exists in knowing these people and their stories. In his photography, he uses a documentary approach to document their daily life. Unlike their individual condition, these images depict slaves as "types of black people" or generic examples of what they do. Furthermore, Christiano intended to counter the stereotype of barbarism and savagery held by some white people.

The exhibition Interferences was held in Lisbon (Portugal) and addressed a variety of topics concerning the structure of the city and its cultural diversity.

"Interferences" aims to shed light on other aspects of the city by bringing together works by contemporary artists who use the streets as a place for expression and experimentation, bringing together artworks from both institutional and private collections, transforming the museum into a meeting place for different communities.

With alternative narratives that aim to question the public, the dynamic of this exhibition extends not only to the cultural diversity of the city, but also to the forgotten realities of the marginalized population that live on its margins.

Reflections:

- For me, it was important to visit this exhibition, which does not only feature many black artists and collectives, but also emphasises how many of these African communities live in Portugal with hopes for a better future.
- Art can also change how cities, urban spaces, and artistic and cultural institutions are built by focusing on a general public, with narratives that take it to identify with them. It makes me think about the cultural and social value of art.
- A major lesson I learned from this exhibition is the need for other types of voices and discourse, which aim to reveal discrimination and oppression, generating new debates for the improvement of society.
- History and memory are two concepts that intersect and being fundamental for the exploration and development in many of these artworks.
- The support of greater cultural diversity and artistic inclusion.
- A museum or gallery can serve as a space to explore timeless utopias and struggles, emerging tensions, and untold stories.

(Jordan, 2021, p.128) With the incorporation of the African fabric, it emphasizes the ambiguities of colonialism and culture hybridity. Wax-resist fabrics have been brought into some African countries by the Dutch, having Indonesian traditions attached to them.

In the middle of the 19th century, the photographic camera is introduced to the world as an extension of white male dominance and patriarchy. The pose and gaze of enslaved black women were mimicked by Daguerrotypes, business cards, and photographs of enslaved women. As a result of these images, black women's bodies, specifically their bellies and breasts, were emphasized as having a significant impact on slavery.

An example of a recurring image in colonial family albums was the “faithful” wet nurse posing with the (white) child she cared for.

It is still unclear how white women used reproductive and maternal violence against their enslaved women. These posed images, which were once part of the family album of the slave master, remain visible and collectible today (digitally) on platforms such as Pinterest, online auctions, and flea markets.

It is a painful experience to look at these portraits of wet nurses. They rarely smile and their eyes are often glassy as if they are always crying. This kind of gaze symbolizes a life without choices. They are downcast and despondent, afraid and obedient, or sometimes even defiant.
Wet nurses often posed with their breasts exposed or nursing a child - either their own or the master's - which was one of the most unspeakable horrors. It was not only the photographs that made the black mother into a caricature, but also how they reinforced white (masculine) fantasies about her as a "Jezebel" or the "Mammy", governed by libido and carrying her master's child.

Christian Boltanski (1944 - 2021)

Memory, mortality, and trauma, particularly as they pertain to the Holocaust, are central themes in Christian Boltanski’s work, as is the tension between appearance and disappearance, obfuscation and revelation. Over the course of his long career, Boltanski has worked in a variety of media, but he is best known for installations such as Altar to the Chases High School, in which lamps and rusty biscuit tins frame reproductions of class pictures taken in 1931 at a Jewish high school in Vienna. The design deliberately mimics that of a medieval altarpiece, with its candles, reliquaries, and painted portraits. Unlike a traditional memorial, however, the lamps that illuminate the pictures in Altar to the Chases High School also obscure them, effacing the individuals they represent. Deprived of both detail and context, moreover, these ghostly photographs betray little of their historical origins. In this way, the work conveys the universality of suffering as well as the insurmountable challenge of remembering — and representing — harrowing events.

Zabat photographic series (1989) depicts nine contemporary Black women who represent mythological Greek Muses. Along with the portraits, the artist also wrote poems that tell the stories of real or imagined historical women. Alice Walker is quoted by Sulter as saying, ‘I don't read history for facts, I read it for clues’ (Walker, 1989, cited in Sulter, 1989, unpaged).

The series uses an allegorical mode of representation that takes advantage of historical precedent, the artist explores a diaspora aesthetics of ‘gathering and re-using’ and the ‘allegorical impulse’ as rescuing from historical oblivion what threatens to disappear. Fusing African and Western elements, each muse in Zabat series embodies a different area of creativity. ‘Conventionally presented in history of Western art as white women (…)’, they are portrayed by contemporary black women writers, activists, musicians and artists (Cherry, 2013, pp.160-161).

The portraits include a variety of dialects that reflect the Black Arts Movement, as well as the Lesbian and Feminist movements of the time. It challenges the stereotypes made of Black women throughout history and the ways in which they are invisible in today's society, ‘(…) with the idea of how black women’s creativity is present then disappears, the notion of the disappeared creative person.’ (Haworth-Booth, 1992, pp.266).

Zabat is a critical revision of colonial heritage, a reflection on the European gaze on Black bodies in the past, and a creative engagement with images and visual patterns that impact contemporary neo-colonial culture. It also reveals how Black feminist readings revive the Black figure and reveal her presence, emerging as a challenge to the invisibility of Black women in the canon of what galleries and exhibition spaces portray.
