1.0 Explain the cause of the social justice issue in society

During the Industrial Revolution factories and workplaces would hire children for work as it was cheaper and more beneficial. Children were employed to work 19 hours a day with only a one-hour total break allowed. They received minimum or no wage and were subjected to work in horrible conditions as well (Www2.needham.k12.ma.us, 2016). Due to these conditions, life expectancy was low as accidents did occur injuring or even killing these children while on the job (W2. vatican.va, 2016). Child labor also affected them negatively by robbing them of basic health care, education and the protection and security of their communities and families. Therefore, the main cause of child labor during the Industrial Revolution was because of the smaller wages and ensured work, however this also led to children’s underdevelopment, limited education and shorten life expectancy.

Section 42 was written in the Rerum Novarum with the purpose of explaining child labor and its negative effects. This section of the Rerum Novarum explained the injustice of children labor and how they were expected to work in the same conditions and jobs as grown men. It expressed how their body development and minds were damaged as well as any chance of any true education. proposed that young children are not be placed in sweat shops and factories, and that a general principal of leisure and rest for the working class be made, in an effort for them to regain their strength. To sum up, section 42 was dedicated to the subject of middle class work and specifically child labor. It had an important significance in these areas with mandated rest given on Sundays and child placement in factories and sweatshops scrutinized and investigated. Therefore the overall response of the Rerum Novarum and especially section 42, is to promote the awareness and prejudiceness of this issue.

During the Industrial Revolution it was recorded that 18% of all American workers were under the age of 16. In addition to this, during the 1800’s a new influx of immigrants was brought in providing a new pool of child workers (HISTORY.com, 2016). These workers led the tremendous expansion of the American industry in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. Ten to fifteen years old were the favourable employment choice indicating that at least 18 percent of these children were employed. However, in southern cotton mills, 25 percent of the employees were below the age of fifteen, with half of these children below age twelve. In addition, the horrendous conditions of work for many child labourers brought the issue to public attention (HISTORY.com, 2016). In Europe however, during the 18th century child labor was only worst with workers aged 10-15 making up the majority of the working class. Workers over 14 made up the remaining 86% (Wathatcher.iweb.bsu.edu, 2016).

The Rerum Novarum's response towards modern issues is informed through the Bible passages and Gospel's teachings to argue against. The Catholic Church reacts to these problems by referring to the Biblical teachings. Biblical teachings are used as they are the entrusted teachings of Jesus and inspire the Catholic Church to embrace God and not reject his beliefs and guidance (Child Labor in the World, 2016). For example, the message inside of Corinthians 12:14 “For children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but parents for their children’ (Bible Gateway, 2016).This passage supports the injustice of child labor supporting that children should be looked after and cared for until their bodies, and minds are sufficiently developed; this includes the right to education, food, shelter and support (Child Labor in the World, 2016). . The church states that child exploitation is a serious violation of a person’s dignity no matter how small or insignificant they seem to society. This is a second opinion of child growth and that the “older should be serving the young, not the young serve the old” (Bible Gateway, 2016). The Gospel continues to support this issue of injustice in Luke 18:15-17 “Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” The Rerum Novarum’s responses to modern day issues use scripture and gospel passages to ensure the teachings of God are involved and not forgotten.

5.0 Explaination of the Reformation of Child Labor During the Industrial Revolution

During the Industrial Revolution, the reformation of child labor started due to protest, political progress and introduced law. In the 18th century people had, had enough of the injustice and began to rally around and fought for the end of child labor and better working conditions. This battle was long fought, with factories protesting and claiming they were doing nothing wrong, but building these children’s character. However, in 1833 the first act of improvement was made with the Factory Act passed in parliament improving the conditions of work. This act limited the amount of hours’ children of certain ages could work (Www2.needham.k12.ma.us, 2016). It also stated that the children were to attend school for no less than two hours during the day. Perhaps the most important part of this act was the part that said the government would appoint officials to make sure the act was carried out and complied with. Later, in the early 20th century an even greater achievement was made when activists went even further to protect children's rights in labor (Www2.needham.k12.ma.us, 2016). Among these figures was Jane Addams, founder of the Hull House. Activists in the U.S. made the government set up the Children's Bureau in 1912. This made it the U.S. government's responsibility to monitor child labor (Www2.needham.k12.ma.us, 2016). Therefore, though it took time and much effort from both the working, middle and the political class; conditions were improved, the amount of work and hours was reduced as well as all child labor either monitored or abolished all together.
