 - A Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) order is written by a doctor and it instructs healthcare providers not to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if a patient stops breathing or if their heart stops beating. The DNR doesn’t have instructions for any other treatment and can only be permitted after a physician speaks with the patient. Ethical concerns can arise when it’s not clear if a patient was capacitated to choose a DNR. In 2017, the case of a Florida man who was rushed to the hospital unconsciously with a “do-not-resuscitate” tattoo across his chest rose questions amongst the hospital staff.

Given the capitalistic foundation of the economy in society, the lower class and poor families are always on edge, not knowing when their next meal will arrive and fighting to get basic survival necessities. Capitalism reinforces this hierarchy, and people below the bar find it incredibly difficult to ascend because capitalism is designed to keep all leaders at the top. It is even more difficult for their children to receive an education, adding to their poverty; they were never given the chance to begin with. No one deserves to be anxious about their financial security at such a young age and to starve for the rest of their lives; we preach about how everyone has basic rights but do nothing in practise. We must increase awareness and funding for organizations that help individuals in need of money and basic necessities, as well as begin to educate ourselves about the effects of capitalism on our society.
