The Ice Man's Wife

During her trip to the South Pole, the young woman undergoes a strange mental and emotional change that leaves her feeling isolated and numb. It is almost if she enters the Ice Man's world: cold, frozen inside ice watching the past accumulate with no hope of the future. Physically, she also gets stranded at the South Pole with no one to connect with. It appears as if the external environment is directly linked to her emotional state.

"I don't know when it began, or when it ended, but before I knew it I was locked away, alone and numb in the endless winter of that world of ice." (Murakami, pg. 796)

After a failed suicide attempt, Aseem is compelled to visit a consultation office in South Delhi. Aseem has a gift of seeing apparitions that has crumbled his life. An anonymous man had stopped him from jumping off a bridge and handed him a card with an address promising that they would help him find his purpose. Aseem receives an ambiguous print-out of a woman with no instructions. The print out comes from a computer (built by a strange man called Pandit Vidyanath). This strange encounter leads him on a three-year journey to finding his purpose.

"He had expected the usual platitudes about life and death, the fatalistic pronouncements
peculiar to charlatan fortune tellers, but this fellow Vidyanath obviously is an original." (Singh, pg 87)

Gan was chosen to be the host of a female Tlic named T'Galoi. Gan was offered as a gift of gratitude to T'Galoi by his mother. Gan believed that they were indebted to T'Galoi for the protection he provided. He witnesses an unplanned birth and is quickly off-put by T'Galoi disregard for Terran life, ultimately crushing the affectionate image he had of her. This strange experience leads Gan to rethink their deal and almost drives him to suicide.

"...a kind of birth...But this was something else, something worse..Yet I couldn't not see it." (Butler, pg. 635)
