Definition of Hero Type

The Unwilling Hero is the perfect type of hero that fits Bilbo Baggins. Once a small hobbit, brought on a huge quest to find the treasure. He isn't willing to, but a scene filled with Gandalf and the dwarves convinces Bilbo to partake in the journey.

This image displays Bilbo being an Unwilling Hero. When he gets told of being on the journey, he freaks out. You can tell, he doesn't want to go along, he doesn't want to partake. But, we all know what happened. He ended up going on the adventure.

"Thorin and Company to Burglar Bilbo greeting! For your hospitality our sincerest thanks, and for your offer of professional assistance our grateful acceptance. Terms: cash on delivery, up to and not exceeding one fourteenth of total profits (if any); all traveling expenses guaranteed in any event; funeral expenses to be defrayed by us or our representatives, if occasion arises and the matter is not otherwise arranged for. Thinking it unnecessary to disturb your esteemed repose, we have proceeded in advance to make requisite preparations, and shall await your respected person at the Green Dragon Inn, Brwater, at 11 a.m. sharp. Trusting that you will be punctual, we have the honour to remain." After this note, they proceeded to tell Bilbo he had 10 minutes to get ready for the quest. He never really had an option, he was kind of just forced into it. He truly fits the Unwilling Hero.

This image displays the big climax of the Hobbit. It's the huge battle that the whole story is leading up to. Bilbo slips on his trusty magic ring right away, and the climax of the story, the fight, finally begins.

"Now he went on again. Down the other side of the great mound he climbed, and the spark of his torch vanished from the sight of the watching dwarves. But soon they saw it far away in the distance again. Bilbo was crossing the floor of the hall." This short quote brings the true thrill of a climax. Bilbo dared on again, he was crossing the floor of the hall. All this screams is the climax. Before this he thought to himself he was a burglar indeed, and he couldn't tell the dwarves about the gem. A true climax.

The resolution of the story finally takes place. Bilbo returns home, after the quest. However, only his cousins really accept him. Bilbo has lost a lot of his reputation, but he doesn't mind. He now just hangs out with the dwarves and wizards.

"Indeed Bilbo found he had lost more than spoons-he had lost his reputation. It is true that for ever after he remained an elf-friend, and had the honour of dwarves, wizards, and all such folk as ever passed that way; but he was no longer quite respectable. He was in fact held by all the hobbits of the neighbourhood to be 'queer'-except by his nephews and nieces on the Took side, but even they were not encouraged in their friendship by their elders." This was the resolution after the text, all though Bilbo was no longer excepted by the other hobbits, he didn't mind. He completed the quest, and found new wizards and dwarves to call his new friends.

Without a doubt, the biggest strength of the graphic novel is the fact that the images portray the story. They give the reader a good idea of what's going on throughout the story, with enough words to understand it. A greatly illustrated page, 111, says, "Roaring he swept over the town. A hail of dark arrows leaped up and snapped and rattled on his scales and jewels and their shafts fell back kindled by his breath burning and hissing into the lake." This page not only has some detail, but the images to show off what's happening in the story. The only drawback from this is the lack of detail in the story. You have to look for it in the illustrations.

The strongest suit from the original passage of the Hobbit is most definitely the detail. Since the obvious flaw of the text, not having images, it has to make up for this with the amount of detail given. The detail that is needed is enough for the reader to be able to visualize and understand what's happening in the passage. Evidence includes, "After a while a twinkling gleam showed them returning, Oin with a small pine-torch alight in his hand, and Gloin with a bundle of others under his arm. Quickly Bilbo trotted to the door and took the torch; but he could not persuade the dwarves to light the others or to come and join him yet." There could've been a much simpler way of saying this, but with the lack of imagines showing this happening the detail of the passage is a huge strength to the Original Text.
