My Take Away

I knew teachers could get burned out; I've been feeling that way myself for the past few years. However, I can see that the role of school counselor is even more susceptible to this because you are personally involved in so many student's personal struggles. Having a plan for self-restoration will prove to be very important.

Importance of Self Care

I have heard that airline attendants will instruct parents to first put on their own oxygen mask in case of emergency, before putting on their child's mask. As a parent, this seems backwards, because we instinctively put our kids' needs first; but the premise is that you can't effectively help your child if you pass out first.

In the same way, those in the "helping" professions must first help ourselves be healthy and well so we can be at our best to help those we serve. It's sometimes hard to remember that, but so necessary.
