Quote: "Mom says I'm mature for my age," I told them, "and she lets me cook for myself a lot."

Explanation: The picture of these kids is reflective of the time when Jeannette's mom let her cook food on her own. This is an example of Coming of Age because Jeannette is super young and has to make the decision of cooking on her own because she doesn't have any parental supervision.

Quote: "Dad please come, we need you!" I hollered. Lori and Brian and mom and Maureen all chimed in. "We need you!" we shouted. Dad stood there looking at us for a minute. Then he flicked the cigarette he was smoking into the yard, closed the front door, loped over to the car, and told mom to move aside-he was driving.

Explanation: The picture of these cigarettes is reflective to the time when Rex flicked his cigarette and offered to drive for Rose Mary. This is an example of Unconditional Love because Rex decided to put out his cigarette to go with Rose Mary and the kids instead of ignoring them.

Quote: "Everyone has something good about them,' she said. 'you have to find the redeeming quality and love the person for that. '/'Oh Yeah?, I said. 'How about Hitler? What was his redeeming quality?' Hitler loved dogs,' Mom said without hesitation."

Explanation: The picture of Hitler is reflective of time when Rose Mary said that she liked Hitler because he loved dogs. This is an example of Forgiveness because this really goes to show the will that Rose Mary has to forgive. Even though she was in poverty, she never saw the bad side to people. She only saw the best in people, even those who hated her.

Quote: "I didn't feel like celebrating. After all he'd put himself through, I couldn't believe Dad had gone back to booze."

Explanation: The picture of broken glass with the word promises in it is reflective to the time when Rex breaks his promise and goes back to his original ways. This is an example of Broken Promises because Rex said that he was going to stop drinking booze but he didn't. He just went back to his old ways and that's why Jeannette didn't feel like celebrating after finding that out.

Quote: "You want me to change my life?" Mom asked. "I'm fine. You're the one who needs help. Your values are all confused."

Explanation: The picture of this man helping another man is reflective to the time when Rose Mary told Jeannette that she didn't need help and that she was the one that had confused values. This is an example of Self-sufficiency because Rose Mary told Jeannette that she didn't need any help so that probably mean't she was capable of taking care of herself. That wasn't the case later on in the book because she ended up asking her for a million dollars which she declined.

Quote: "That was the thing about the hospital. You never had to worry about running out of stuff like food or ice or even chewing gum. I would been happy staying in that hospital forever."

Explanation: The picture of this checkered background with the messy one on the right is reflective of the time when Jeannette was in the hospital and didn't want to leave cause it was nice there. This is an example of Chaos and Order because she is in the hospital all comfortable and then her dad comes in trying to break her out which just ruins her relaxation and the time she enjoyed being there.
