My Strengths in the Core Techniques Module are:

My ability to pick up choreography has improved a lot and has become one of my main strengths, as I can now watch movement material and know that my body can meet the demands which are being placed on it. Due to this I am able to perform the work to the best of my ability. As my vocabulary within the Jazz genre has become bigger since studying Luigi, I am now able to recognise movement material from our movement memory; ‘Your brain creates pathways through your central nervous system, and movements become automatic, the more regularly you use these pathways, the more your muscle memory solidifies’ (Yeager, 2010) there by being able to pick up steps faster and apply the correct technique.

I feel my leaps have become one of my strengths during semester two of my second year. I am now able to gain the height required in order to create a flat line; a one hundred and eighty degree angle, when leaping in the air. I have learnt to plie ‘a bending of the knees outward by a ballet dancer with the back held straight’ (Merriam-Webster, 2017) more especially in the step before taking off and to attempt to travel the leap, rather than maintaining a position in the air. This will make the leap longer and allow the back leg to stay in the air for a greater time period.

My Weaknesses in the Core Techniques Module are:

I feel my biggest weakness in Core techniques 2, is my attention to the finer details. I feel that sometimes due to my poor hearing, my musicality isn’t great and this makes it hard to fit small intricate movements to the aural accompaniment; musicality is ‘sensitivity to, knowledge of, or talent for music’ (Merriam-Webster, 2015) . This means sometimes movements can be rushed causing confusion and an inability to finish them off. I feel I could improve this by listening to different genres of music I wouldn’t usually listen to, to become familiar with different instruments, tempos and found sounds.

My flexibility on my left hand side, I feel has let me down within the module Core Techniques 2. ‘There are different types of flexibility. For example the dancer may need to consider, static flexibility: the range of motion possible at a joint and dynamic flexibility: the resistance of a joint to motion.’ (Anon, 2017) I feel my right hand ball and socket joint lacks range of motion making it very difficult to be flat in left leg splits. Your splits is essentially the position you hit when completing a grand jeté in the air. Within the core techniques module we are marked on both the right and left hand side of each exercise, equating to fifty percent of the grade for that particular section. So although I feel my leaps were one of my strengths within this module, I also feel my left hand side flexibility will have brought my marks down, due to not being able to create the one hundred and eighty degree flat line required for this industry.

Within Core Techniques 2 I and my peers have noticed a dramatic improvement in my pirouettes ‘a rapid whirling about of the body; especially: a full turn on the toe or ball of one foot in ballet.’ (Merriam-Webster, 2017) From watching video feedback of my mock assessment back in semester one of Core Techniques 2, I witness my leg dropping from the retiré position, leading to me losing my centre of mass and falling out of pirouettes. As you can see from the image on my Padlet, I am no longer dropping my leg and I have regained ankle strength from completing physiotherapy exercises after receiving trauma injuries to both ankles. This has enabled me to balance in the retiré position for an extended time-frame, essentially allowing me to complete more rotations.

I need to learn to control my adrenalin ‘A stress hormone produced within the adrenal gland that quickens the heartbeat, strengthens the force of the heart's contraction, and opens up the bronchioles in the lungs, among other effects. The secretion of adrenaline is part of the human 'fight or flight' response to fear, panic, or perceived threat. Also known as epinephrine’ (MedicineNet, 2017) especially within assessment conditions. I feel I always under perform in assessments due to nerves and by added adrenaline being released into the body causing side effects such as, irregular heartbeat, weakness and shaking. I feel if I treat every lesson as an assessment class, my body will become used to these adrenalin rushes and side effects won’t be as prominent within my work - especially during exercises such as the isolation's, which requires us to isolate one singular body part, demanding complete control over our bodies.

Eugene Louis Facciuto (Luigi) is often referred to as one of the fathers of Jazz dance. This is due to Luigi creating the first codified technique for Jazz dance following on from a near fatal car accident. His style is often described as ‘Classic jazz, sophisticated, elegant, and even liquid fire.’ (Luigijazz, 2017)

The Luigi technique is the main technique we study at Shockout Arts within our Jazz training. It consists of codified arm lines such as high parallels, Jazz first, second, third and fourth etc. This correlates with the codified positions of the feet – Jazz fourth pictured.

His exercises are structured and consist of ballet based movements. An example of the structure of one of his excercises would be the foot excercise containing tendus, glissé, grand battement and grande battement with the relevé; as you can see the exercise progress’ gradually in order to make sure the body is warmed up probably – this relates back to Luigi’s car accident where by his paralysis would be portrayed if he stopped moving. He had to make sure he warmed-up correctly to prevent further injury and this was the cornerstone for the basis of his technique.
