The Civil Rights Movement was social and political in nature within the United States, during the mid-1950s into the late 1960s, with the main objective of ending segregation and discrimination against African Americans. Its roots went back to earlier drives for abolition and equality, but it is said that the movement started in earnest after World War II because African Americans were victims of systemic mistreatment. There were segregated schools, disparate and low-paying job opportunities, terrible housing conditions, and no voting privileges. Accordingly, its principal aims were the ridding of society from segregation and the establishment of voting rights and ensuring equal treatment under the law.

By holding peaceful protests, sit-ins, and marches, they worked to unmask the injustices and force legislative pressure. That led to a number of big successes, such as the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which legally ended segregation and prohibited racial discrimination in voting. But they were also gravely confronted with violent opposition from some Southern leaders and law enforcers. Such obstacles notwithstanding, this movement stamped American society with a deep mark, opening up the road to equal rights and justice.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most important figures in the entire Civil Rights Movement-a movement based upon completely nonviolent resistance, usually with concepts from Mahatma Gandhi in India. He took part in leading activities such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Birmingham Campaign, and the March on Washington,which eventually made the movement visible nationally. King's ideas onequality and his "I Have a Dream" speech became the symbols of struggle for racial justice and made great contributions to the establishment of laws regarding civil rights.
