Throughout this project, I was constantly feeling like it wasn't a good piece and that it wasn't going to turn out the way I wanted it too. Once it was finished, I felt very neutral toward it and as the semester has come to an end, I've grown to enjoy looking at it. It was my first time attempting pointillism and I think I learned to be very good at it, I was very surprised how well it turned out. This piece was very time consuming; however, it was all worth it and it took me another step toward obtaining my goal of realism. This composition represented a lot of growth in my art work, because I had never done anything like this before. I learned so much from doing this project, it definitely took me out of my comfort zone and by trying this out I feel like this has become more apart of my comfort zone and I want to branch out further. One thing I wish I could go back and change is the growth aspect of the entire project. It was hard to tell what the entire growth idea was and if the woman was alive or dead on the right side. At first, I thought of doing an animal; however, my mind changed shortly after. I knew that I wanted to paint another person, because throughout my entire art career, I've been working on establishing realism. I had only done one other portrait this year and that was my first one I've ever truly done in my entire art career through the high school. I had several visions for my portrait and the color choices I wanted and the original image I wanted to portray for this piece wasn't the one it ended up being. Originally, I was going to put a strip of one color over her eyes and across her face; however, I trashed that idea halfway through. The purple and blue lines originally came from the idea that I thought her face was too chubby and I wanted to give her some definition; although, it came out a lot deeper and bolder than I planned. It took me a long time to choose what colors I wanted, I had my outline on my good paper and I still didn't know what colors I wanted. After using color swatches and playing around with both sets of colors I finally settled on the orange set. In the piece, I used the blue-violet color for a lot of her base features. For the background and her right eye, I mixed together the blue-violet and the orange, I really enjoyed that color and I used it to shade her nose and lips. My favorite feature of hers is the orange hair and eyebrows, it gives it such vibrant and contrasting look with all the warmer colors. I've attempted realism in almost every piece and I challenged myself by setting the goal to use as many new mediums as possible and to step out of my comfort zone. This semester was the first semester that I truly attempted the human face and I saw even the smallest improvements from my first and my last. My goal for every art class I've been in through the high school was to further my skills in realism and I've grown tremendously this semester with that goal. I'm very very happy with my growth with every piece that went by and although I may have not been happy with all of them they all show my hard work and determination. I've struggled with being a perfectionist this semester, I wanted all my pieces to go exactly how I wanted them to and I definitely struggled when something went wrong that I hadn't expected. I've been slowly overcoming that struggle, especially with this past piece, I learned to just let happy accidents happen. I would like my art to continue on the path that it is one, which is to fully establish realism.
