For generations in my family, a tattoo had been the emissary of injustice. In other words, my family regarded tattooing as the most inappropriate act. Hence, I was directly subjected to this value of the elder until this value of mine was utterly shattered by the defiant incident of my brother.

On a late evening, constant rebukes from my parents poured on my brother as they spotted a small tattoo on his left arm. While my initial reaction was similar to my parents, a sense of curiosity lingered in my heart as I observed my brother defending his choice. 'Is tattoo truly a disgrace?' I questioned myself as my teenage curiosity sparked. The tense atmosphere escalated as my family engaged in heated arguments as my brother obtained several new tattoos. Thanks to this incident, I finally determined to resolve the conflict of my family by defining the precise nature of tattoos through research.

This realization merely fueled me to research deeper into the nature of tattoos. Eventually, my effort came to fruition as I realized that the origin of traditional tattoos in Vietnam bore no relation to violence. According to Lĩnh Nam chích quái by Trần Thế Pháp, Vietnamese fishermen in the early days acquired tattoo marks to safeguard against mythical threats of the sea. My mission persisted as I interviewed several tattoo artists and fans of this art form regarding their modern view of tattoos. The most common answers resided in personal aesthetics and memory preservation. Hence, it is safe to conclude that tattoos should bear no inappropriate meaning.

After weeks of fruitful research, I managed to resolve my familial conflict by persuading my parents that tattoo acquisition is not disgraceful by nature but rather a misinterpreted art. Anyone should have the privilege to get tattoos without harming society. Although a change in my family's value could not shift the prejudice concerning tattoos, I believe any effort counts in creating a world that values this art form.

Initially, I encountered several articles which stated that, following the French and Japanese invasions, tattoos obtained a terrible reputation as prisoners were marked with tattoos by the authority. This predicament led to a negative perspective towards tattoos among the previous generations. Furthermore, as social media portrayed images of lawbreakers with full-body tattoos, the prejudice against patrons of tattoos was fortified, and my parents' regard of tattoo advocates as potential violators directly stemmed from this impact.
