I am a student at Durham college since September 2019 doing a Developmental services worker course. I completed high school in 2018 from an international school in India. My image is that I always fill the people who come into my life with happiness and freshness. I am a disciplined daughter of my parents and a supporting sister for my brother. As a student of DSW, I see myself as color. The mixture of different colours in me shows that I am away from the walls of discrimination, color, race, and religion. Colors motivate me to be happy and fill happiness in someone’s life. In this field, colors gave me direction to fill happiness in the life of supported people with services. Multicolored walls and vivid ornaments around me helps to overcome my stress, anxiety, depression, weakness and gives me the strength, independence, enthusiasm, creativity to deal with circumstances. Colors make my thinking creative and make me think OUT OF THE BOX. This brings a smile to my face every day and I deem that “I am not skin color. I contain all of humanity in my heart and my mind, my flesh, my blood, and my bones, and I am proud of that fact. You should be, too.”

My name is Arshdeep Kaur. There are four members in my family. My father, mother, brother, and me. I have a happy and cheerful family. My uncle and aunt are also living nearby our home. My family is very supportive, caring, and helpful. They always gave me direction to my way of life when I was stuck with problems. They tried to fulfill my all dreams and give wings to my dreams and thoughts. Other than that, my best friends contribute to a meaningful place in my life. I have two best friends in my life and their names are Jagpreet Singh and Yug. They always stand by me in my ups and downs of my life. I am here in Canada far away from my motherland. They never make me feel alone. Sometimes I get depressed and feel homesick, but they make me think that I am not alone they are with me in every corner of the world. They respect my parents a lot. Moreover, I am an extrovert and a helping person. I always tried to make others happy and fill colors in their life. I like to listen to the song in leisure time, do cooking, dancing, singing and play guitar. My other preference is to write notes about my whole day what I did special and helpful today. I never discriminate against people based on gender, color, and race. I understand this embarrassing phase because I am also going through it. For me talk with my parents most of the time, watching TV, play games, watering plants, gardening, play with teddy bears make me happy. When someone shouts and yelled at me the I started to cry. I feel sad when someone when I missed a day to talk with my parents, stuck with assignments and pressure from work.

I play a specific role in everyone’s life but most important and my preferable roles are daughter, sister, and a friend.

As a daughter, I am a loving, disciplined, and responsible daughter for my parents. I am always responsible for my duties towards my family and parents. My parents trust and stand by me always. In our tradition, educating girls is a wastage of money. But my parents educate me, support me, and fulfill my goals. I never went against them and I always obey their words and decisions. I love and respect my parents and try to save their respect.

As a sister, I am a cheerful and supporting sister for my brother. I have a younger brother. I am not educated much but still, I always tried to give him good advice and recruit him on an optimistic path. I always support him when he creates problems in my family and resolves the problems. I help him in his studies, giving lessons on morals and ethics.

As a friend, I am a loyal, dedicated, supportive, and honest friend. My friends are a shadow of protection when I am far away from my family. They care a lot for me and stand by my thick and thin. I respect their decisions about what they make for me and always try to build a good relationship with them.

Moreover, all the time I make sure to help the needy people and help them when they are stuck with problems. I give them helpful advice. I think that the world should be changed and make a difference in the world. In my tradition, educating girls is not a fruitful idea and many discriminations between boys and girls occur more. I want people to understand that stop discriminating between them and try to think about them equally. Likewise, plant a tree on our birthday makes the world free from pollution and spread oxidation. My strengths such as helping others, cooperative, courageous, initiation, patience, loyal organized, thoughtful, trustworthiness, discipline all make me achieve these tasks.

My CAREER GOALS related to my CAREER VISION

My strengths keen me to achieve my career goals. My first career goal is to stop discriminating between girls and boys and support the education of girls. Girls are the way of success to an optimistic and peaceful life in the future. It is the 21st century and still people discriminating between girls. I want to join NGO with friends after completing my studies. This NGO gets money from funds and donations from people and they also pay for it from their own salaries. They enroll needy girls into schools and colleges to get an education. They pay for their fee and books. I want to be a part of this team. I want to support girls and be a unique image of the world. Educating girls is not a bad thing if a girl is educated then she can give good lessons, morals, knowledge, and ethics to their children which turn over into their children as children get lessons from their parents. My parents speak up for me and make me educate till high school and now they are paying for my fee and funds. Girls who have no parents who will pay for them. I want to make them the same level as boys and even more of them. So that they can raise their own voice and create their own unique image.

Secondly, my career vision is to plant one tree on a birthday. People spent a bulk of money on their birthday. They spent a lot on parties, decoration, food and many more. But due to the raising of global warming, pollution, and oxidation problems, I want them to plant one tree every year on their birthday to make our Earth pollution-free. I want them to make our Earth filled with clean air, free from disease arising from less deoxidation, dust, and skin diseases. I always try to make contributions to my goals and vision. My friends and helping me in achieving this vision. I would think that people will understand my forevision and apply them in their lives.

I did morning chores and sat on a chair in the living room reading magazine sitting near Janice after doing my breakfast. Janice threw the remote of the TV at me and this action of her hurts me as well.

Minor incident: At 11:00 am, Janice was sitting on a chair. She always put all her stuff in her purse, she is obsessed with purses. She was eating popcorns and watching TV. She seems well at this moment. I was sitting beside a chair with her and reading some magazines. Suddenly, she freaked out and trying to put the remote in her purse. I asked her why she is doing it.
REFLECTION ON ORAL PRESENTATION

My oral presentation was based on my parents. My parents are very supportive and always helps me in every aspect of my life. My parents are my strength. My parents gave me guidance in my studies. I am a very strong, determined person with good presentation skills, courageous and confident person. While presenting, I have a good volume which is audible, and I have good and different communication skills. I also maintain eye contact in this oral presentation and present my self very well. Body language was not stressed while I was present my video. I am always relaxed and calm. I prefer to explain my thoughts rather than reading the material directly from the notes. I also use visual aids and other supports for making my presentation better. I use core points to explain my viewpoints. I use collaboration and creative thinking when I do teamwork and do my group projects. My parents taught me these skills and I came to know from my experience by working in a group home. I think my overall oral presentation was good, but I think it was a little bit unprofessional. I need to wear some formal clothes to present my oral presentation. At last, I would say that my oral presentation was a platform to get a chance to speak for my family.

Reflection on Interviewing Process/Prep/Mock Interviews

This assignment was creative and interesting. It makes a good connection with other group members. One of the main benefits of having communication skills is that it helps you to build a strong connection with others. If you are good with interpersonal skills, you can build a long-lasting relationship or friendship with others. This skill may be of great help to you when you are in public, for example, in your workplace. With the help of interviewing skills, you will also be able to persuade your interview very well at the first meeting. To put it differently, it helps you to convince others well. It provides an opportunity to practice the interview skills of both persons at one time. In this, we did four interviews and ask questions from others. I put myself as an interviewee and an interviewer. I enjoyed it while using my creative skills and managing tasks. Analyze the problems from a distinct perspective and identify the limitations of how to give a supportive answer. I need to use my thinking skills to think about a question and gave an appropriate answer within a fixed time limit. We will give feedback as well about a person how they present an interview. The observer role for me was quite easy as I need to observe their way of speaking, posture, gesture, and verbal skills. Most of them are centered around communication like that of questioning, listening, and understanding the body language. The interviewee and interviewer role was quite interesting for me. I used judgment while talking interview of my group members. This assignment makes me think to ask a different question and enhance my presentation skills.

Reflection on the Communication Lab Group Process—Collaboration Skills

The lab group process was group work in which our group members plays a very vital role. Collaboration means working with somebody in a group and having active communication and active listening. Collaboration in other words means teamwork, we started understanding each other very well. According to core competency by Hay group, there are four levels of competency collaboration.

Level 1: “Is collaborate does own share of work.” This means; one understands the goals and responsibilities of teamwork and readily accepts the assigned work, starts working on it, and shares information with other team members.

Level 2: “Values others and solicits inputs” which means; he/ she must understand others, value their views ask for their inputs, and build a positive relationship with others.

Level3: “Encourage others” which means he/she has the potential to encourage and empower others, credit others for their performance.

Direct support professionals and DSW workers fall under level 3: which shows we respect the thoughts and desires of others and put them forward rather than putting our views first by neglecting other’s views. This boosts morals, productivity brings new ideas and creativity. This group activity encourages and empowers others and give strong wings to their views. Overall, I have contributed well to the communication lab group process with my group members and try to do my best.
