I chose this song to support my idea of the American Dream because it really shows the American Dream as how it´s portrayed in most books and songs. Its talks about it the way I imagine people who are coming to this country plan to achieve and why. The songs starts with an old man sitting on a rocker. He asks the narrator what hes been up to and he says ¨Chasin´ a dollor¨. The Old man proceeds to tell him what he believes is the best way to live and spend time and money. The song talks about finding and marrying ¨the one you can´t live without¨ and doing what you love for work. The song states ¨you cant buy happiness, but you can buy dirt.¨ I believe that thats what the American Dream is all about. Not the extreme wealth and riches, fame, big houses and expensive cars, or fancy clothes. Its about the security of living in a home you own witht the people who matter most. Having not too much but not too litle and being content and happy with what you do have and proud of it. Based on Chris Gardners autobiography, the movie ¨The Pursuit of Happyness¨ supports my thesis that the American Dream is realn because Chris Gardner came from nothing. He was poor, struggled to pay taxes and rent, and even went homeless. He struggled to make a living for himself and his son after his wife left him but when he cam across an oppurtunity, he did everything in his power to get it. My grandma was 3rd generation born free after her grandma was brought to Cuba from Kenya many, many years before. She states that Being born in Cuba, life was good for a short period of time. She dreamed of being an architects and one day designing her own home. She talks about how when the government was overthrown, changes happened very quickly for the worse. They left Cuba for Spain witht the goal of reaching America. Hoping to get a taste of the American dream after hearing so many success stories. Not knowing much english at all, if any, they came to america and lived with family for a short time. Shortly after getting a job in the canning and jarring industry, they bought a house and built a pool for their kids, as they dreamed of. Not long after, they sold the house bought a bigger home and built a bigger pool. Reyna was abandoned by her parents at a very young age and left with her grandmother for years while her parents were chasing the American Dream themselves. Although they werent very successful, when her father came back to Mexico to visit them she took the oppurtunity to go to America with him. Despite not knowing any english, she did her best in school as eventually ended up with college offers.
