-We did a tour of department 
-Explained immobilisation and set up sheets
-Showed them where to find basic case discussion information 
-Explained to them they can come to us with any questions 
(these are things which we feel we would have benefited from during our first week of placement, and have had positive feedback stating they think we did all we can to help them settle in to placement) 

Behaviour that surprise us:
-they seemed very confident in comparison to how we remember being during the first few weeks of placement

As third years we felt unprepared for the arrival of the first year students, not knowing what was expected of us and not having much/any support from our PDF. After this, we worked with them in the treatment rooms and introduced them to the staff members and explained techniques and showed the immobilisation devices. Helped them bring patients round from the waiting area. I feel like they found it useful as it was a large department and they had a lot of questions.

Learnt how important support can be for trainees as I didn't have my own mentor at the start of the course

Most well behaved. One example of shocking behaviour. Swearing in front of staff. Getting phone out infront  of staff. Lack of manners.

Gillian met them and assisted with their transition into clinical. 
Staff were willing to include the first years and let them get involved.

Wary when giving instructions 'want to bring a patient round' looking like you're delegating jobs you can't be bothered to do
Mentee and mentor placed onto the same treatment room would make mentoring more helpful

Some of them were apprehensive when interacting with them, which made the students feel uncomfortable on their first day. I tried to counteract this by involving the student the set ups and bringing patients round from the waiting area.
