Thanks to the influence of the internet, society is becoming an oxymoron of itself: anti-social. Almost 20 years ago, Carnegie-Mellon suggested that the internet would "turn us into hermits" (Smiley). There study proved to be correct. Online sales this past Christmas (2016) surged to 56.5% of shoppers doing all of their shopping online (Soergel). But it's not just Christmas shopping. This presentation will visit five technologies that have contributed to the convenience of never leaving the house!

Heal- bringing back house calls.

Website: https://heal.com/
While there are many telehealth services available for patients, there is only one where a doctor comes to the patient: Heal.com. Inspired by Uber, with a quick text a doctor will appear at your doorstep. Heal is one of the latest technologies in the growing health care field. The accept most major insurances and charge only $99 without insurance. The house call visits are nice for times when one may consider going to the emergency room but doesn't want to spend hours waiting in a room of other sick people. If additional tests are needed, such as an MRI, of course the patient will have to go to a clinic. Heal is can also give routine immunizations, such as flu shots.
Technology is really influencing the trends in healthcare. At a conference in San Francisco, the CEO of Kaiser stated that "over half of all interactions between patients and doctors are now done virtually (Kokalitcheva). Doctors are excited about Heal because it allows them to see half the amount of patients they are accustomed to seeing for the same amount of money. (Kokalitcheva).
Heal is a new company and is only available in parts of California now with one location also in Washington DC.
The app is available on both itunes and Google Play.

Shipt- Groceries on Demand

https://www.shipt.com/
This is a great service that provides personal grocery shopping and delivery. For a fee of just $14.99 a month, individuals can order groceries online, and select a time for them to be delivered right to their doorstep. A shopper gets the grocery list online at the local store, shops the list and runs it through the check-out. The account holders credit card is on file and the groceries are paid for. The shopper delivers the groceries. Ta da! As long as the order is a minimum of $35, shoppers can take advantage of this service as many times a month as they like. My local store is Meijers. I have used this service myself for 2 months now and it is very convenient. The website lists groceries including produce as well as health and beauty aids, over the counter medicines, cleaners, pet food and just about anything else one could find at a typical grocery. Alcohol and cigarettes can't be ordered, nor can coupons be used, but there is a space for special requests and as long as Meijers carries it, it can be delivered!
As with everything else, the app is available on ITunes and Google Play.

www.blueapron.com
This innovative company started in 2012 and ships pre-portioned meals - not prepared, but ready to cook- to households. There mission is to " create better standards, regenerate the land, eliminate the middleman, thus reducing food waste." (blueapron.com/vision). This forward way of thinking is that by pre portioning meals for families and sending the amount needed for a standard meal size, food won't go to waste. According to a recent study, "we could provide a 2,000-calorie diet to 84% of the population!" (Rossman). Blue Apron strives to prevent food waste by portion control and by working with farmers to serve the freshest food at a decent price. Certainly a win/win.

It's only available in a selected area. This is great innovation because it will eliminate the need to drive for alcohol when already drinking. You can even book a bartender through the app to come to your next event. There is a page on the website that you can put in how many guests will be at your party, how long the party will be and what type of drinks you will be serving and it will display how much alcohol you need to buy. It must be working- in 2015 sales were expected to be in the 8 figure range (Crook).

https://www.theglamapp.com/
Even hermits want to look good. Enter The Glam App. Another company inspired by the Uber model, The Glam App allows beauticians to pick up requests and go to client's homes to provide hair and makeup services. One of the founders, Cara, stated that when she was new in town, she wasn't sure where to go and get her hair and nails done. She talked it over with her now partner Joey and they decided to turn it into a freelancer's app (Zara). This app lets you consult with a stylist about beauty needs and also allows you to book an appointment for one to come to your home. You can choose to have your hair, nails or makeup done. The website boasts some of the stylists biographies and the different services available.
