Often, when overlooking key information regarding specifics in a contract or invitation, you make mistakes and agree to something you wouldn't have. Every character in this book has been deceived by UN Owen as they ignored the fact that the invitation was clearly mistrustful, and instead unknowingly were led into a trap that would cost them their lives. Had they paid closer attention to the letter, they would have thought twice before going to a secluded location with strangers they didn't know. You can see that based off of the characters internal thoughts, they have all reached the conclusion that they have been tricked from a very early part in the book.
