### **Lesson Plan: Unit 1 - Life Stories We Admired: Getting Started**

**Grade**: 12
**Duration**: 45 minutes
**Unit**: 1 - Life Stories We Admired
**Lesson Title**: Getting Started

---

### **Objectives:**
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Understand the concept of "life stories" and identify elements of inspirational life stories.
2. Practice reading and listening skills through short texts about famous people.
3. Discuss and share opinions about admired individuals.
4. Use vocabulary related to life stories and achievements in context.

### **Materials Needed:**
- Textbook (or prepared handouts)
- Projector or board for displaying visuals
- Audio clips (if available)
- Chart paper and markers for group activities

---

### **Lesson Structure**

#### **1. Warm-up (5 minutes)**

- **Activity**: Think-Pair-Share
 - **Instructions**: Write the question on the board: "Who is the person you admire the most and why?"
 - Ask students to think individually for 1 minute and then share their thoughts with a partner. Afterward, invite a few pairs to share with the whole class.
- **Purpose**: This activity gets students thinking about life stories and sets the context for the lesson.

#### **2. Introduction to the Topic (5 minutes)**

- Display the lesson title: "Life Stories We Admired: Getting Started."
- Briefly introduce the concept of life stories and explain that today's lesson will focus on people who have made a positive impact on the world.
- Highlight some examples of famous individuals (e.g., Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai) and discuss why their stories are inspiring.

#### **3. Vocabulary Introduction (10 minutes)**

- **Activity**: Vocabulary Matching
 - Display or distribute a list of key vocabulary related to life stories (e.g., perseverance, achievement, adversity, inspiration, dedication, contribution).
 - Students work in pairs to match the words with their definitions.
- **Check Understanding**: Go over the answers with the class and provide examples or sentences for each word.

#### **4. Reading Activity (10 minutes)**

- **Activity**: Reading Comprehension
 - Distribute a short text or a passage from the textbook about a famous person’s life story (e.g., a summary of Malala Yousafzai's life or Nelson Mandela's journey).
 - **Instructions**: Students read the passage individually, underlining any words they don’t understand.
- **Comprehension Questions**:
 - Ask a few comprehension questions (e.g., Who is the person? What challenges did they face? What did they achieve?).
- Discuss the answers as a class.

#### **5. Listening Activity (5 minutes)**

- **Activity**: Listening to an Audio Clip
 - Play a short audio clip of a speech or a brief biography about another admired figure (e.g., Helen Keller, Steve Jobs).
 - **Instructions**: Students listen and take notes on key details (e.g., name, achievements, challenges).
- **Follow-up**: Ask a few students to share what they learned.

#### **6. Speaking Activity (5 minutes)**

- **Activity**: Group Discussion
 - Divide the class into small groups. Each group discusses the following question: "What qualities make a person admirable?"
 - Encourage students to use the vocabulary they’ve learned.
- **Feedback**: Each group shares one quality with the class.

#### **7. Writing Activity (5 minutes)**

- **Activity**: Short Paragraph Writing
 - Ask students to write a short paragraph about someone they admire, using at least 3-4 vocabulary words from the lesson.
- **Pair Review**: Have students exchange their paragraphs with a partner to provide feedback.

#### **8. Wrap-up (5 minutes)**

- Review the key vocabulary and ideas discussed in the lesson.
- Ask students to reflect on why it's important to learn about the lives of others and how they can be inspired by them.
- Assign homework: Research and prepare a short presentation on a person they admire, focusing on that person’s life story and achievements.

---

### **Assessment:**

- Participation in discussions
- Answers to reading comprehension questions
- Use of vocabulary in speaking and writing activities

---

### **Differentiation:**

- For advanced students: Encourage them to find more complex vocabulary related to life stories and use it in their writing.
- For struggling students: Provide additional support with vocabulary definitions and examples. Allow them to work in pairs during reading activities.

This lesson plan aims to engage students with various skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing) while introducing them to inspirational life stories and the vocabulary associated with this theme.
