After lunch kambili is in her room reading a bible until she hears loud sounds coming from her parents room. Imaging that papa was trying to get the door unstuck, 20 seconds later papa is seen carrying mama slung over his shoulders and carries her downstairs with blood trailing after her. Mama ends up coming home the next day informing kambili that the baby is gone. Next sunday papa makes his family stay behind after mass to pray for mamas forgiveness, although kambili does not know why. During that time before kambili exams she has a hard time concentrating, when suddenly Yewande Coker(wife of papas editor) comes to their home sobbing as she says that soldiers have taken Ade away.
