Simulation learning is a teaching strategy that allows student nurses to develop, improve, and apply knowledge and skills in a realistic clinical situation that is an interactive learning experience. During the simulation a patient scenario is presented to the nursing student and the student is to respond. The goal is for nursing students to gaining experience, apply knowledge and refine skills to develop competencies without fear of harm to a live patient (Durham, 2014).

By using simulation learning, patient safety is not at risk. Simulations provide learners with opportunities to experience scenarios and intervene in clinical situations within a safe, supervised setting without posing a risk to a patient (Durham, 2014)

Students anxiety level can increase due to the fear of being judge and closely watched by clinical instructors. The cost of the equipment is expensive, and there has to be a faculty member who is knowledgeable on how to run and maintain equipment (Durham, 2014).

Simulation can be used in distance learning by presenting the student with a challenging patient scenario and the nursing student has to react, for example a patient is coding, the nurse is giving the patient data and the nurse has to select what to do next. This allows the nurse to practice in a setting that is controlled but does not require someone to physical watch the nursing students’ response because the computer records the reaction time and response.

Simulation applications

1. Medscape is a popular app that is used on mobile devices for a reference of medications, disease process, etc. There is also a simulation learning feature in the app that allows nurses to determine the plan of care of certain patient situations. This app and the feature are beneficial to nursing education because it is impossible remember every detail of every disease and having a resource that is reliable and creditable is crucial in ensuring the correct patient care is delivered (Bridget, 2013).

2. The cardiopulmonary patient stimulator by Laerdal allows nurses to engage in critical patient sceneries. When a patient begins to decline a nurse either reacts or becomes frightened, by practicing the nurse can become comfortable when persisted with a critical patient situation. This is extremely beneficial to nursing practice by allowing nurses to become familiar with a change in patient status and action that needs to take place (“Harvey the Cardiopulmonary Patient Simulator,” 2018).

I chose Padlet presentation software. The software was user friendly and gave me step by steps guides to creating the presentation, however I did not like the fact the software would have to be purchased for more than 3 presentations and I did not like how the textboxes could not be formatted to different shapes or sizes.
