April 9, 1898 - Spain announces an armistice, granting Cuba limited powers of self government. This causes the US Congress to issue resolution that declared Cuba's independence. This leads to the President of the US, William McKinley, to send forces to secure withdrawal of Spain's armed forces on Cuba.
April 24, 1898 - Spain declares war on the United States.
April 25, 1898 - The United States declares war on Spain.
May 1, 1989 - George Dewey leads a US naval squadron into Manila Bay in the Philippines. This leads to an easy defeat of the anchored Spanish army.
July 3, 1898 - Cervera leads his squadron out of Santiago in an attempt to escape westward along the coast. This resulted in a battle in which all of his ships came under heavy fire from U.S. guns and were eventually destroyed.
July 17, 1898 -Santiago surrenders to Shafter which resulted in the end of the war.
December 10, 1898 - Spain renounces their claim to Cuba, Puerto Rico, and ceded Guam to the United States.

There was a lot of demand for US intervention especially upon the Sinking of a US ship in the Havana Harbor which was there to protect US citizens. Congress declared cuba's right to independence, demanded the withdrawal of spanish armed forces and authorized the president's use of force.
