         <title>The Spanish-American War (1898)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>February 1895</strong> - Cuban struggles for independence from Spain.<br><strong>April 9, 1898</strong> - Spain announces an armistice, granting Cuba limited powers of self government. This causes the US Congress to issue resolution that declared Cuba's independence. This leads to the President of the US, William McKinley, to send forces to secure withdrawal of Spain's armed forces on Cuba. <br><strong>April 24, 1898 </strong>- Spain declares war on the United States.<br><strong>April 25, 1898</strong> - The United States declares war on Spain. <br><strong>May 1, 1989</strong> - George Dewey leads a US naval squadron into Manila Bay in the Philippines. This leads to an easy defeat of the anchored Spanish army.<br><strong>July 3, 1898 </strong>- Cervera leads his squadron out of Santiago in an attempt to escape westward along the coast. This resulted in a battle in which all of his ships came under heavy fire from U.S. guns and were eventually destroyed. <br><strong>July 17, 1898</strong> -Santiago surrenders to Shafter which resulted in the end of the war.<br><strong>December 10, 1898</strong> - Spain renounces their claim to Cuba, Puerto Rico, and ceded Guam to the United States. <br><br></div>]]></description>

Congress also allowed the president to use force in order to secure Spain's withdrawal from Cuba. The US naval squadron proved itself to be superior when it destroyed the anchored US fleet and occupied Manila. Sovereignty over the philippines was transferred to the United States for $20,000,000.</div>]]></description>

He was the assistant secretary of the navy, which boosted the respect of the people of the United States, later leading to the future success of his presidency. <br><strong>Military</strong> -  President McKInley failed to negotiate and had to ask to ask congress do declare war. With this said military forces had authorization to fight and win.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div> The United States decided to enter this conflict when Americans felt sympathy for cuban rebels as they were trying to gain independence from spain. There was a lot of demand for US intervention especially upon the Sinking of a US ship in the Havana Harbor which was there to protect US citizens. Congress declared cuba's right to independence, demanded the withdrawal of spanish armed forces and authorized the president's use of force. The United States declared war on April 25. </div>]]></description>
