There is a difference between the terms "chat" and "Instant messaging."

Chat: usually refers to a chat room-digital forum where multiple people can connect their computers to a group of others for the purpose of sending text, images and more to everyone at once.

IM: Short, one-on-one conversation in which your computer device is connected to another for the purpose of exchanging text, images and other forms of media.

E.g. Class Dojo-app great for conversing with parents on a separate IM to communicate the child's progress (https://www.classdojo.com/)
