Hypocrisy Dilemma-David-ETH 9-4 Saturday 2nd Semester Cycle 2 SY 2021-2022 by Peter Jonas David

Jay and his mom were on the way home from attending an evening at school for parents and teenagers. The event was designed for parents and teens to build communication skills around the issues that kids face during high school.

The night had gone so well that Jay decided this was a good time to ask his mom about drugs. He had been wanting to do that for a long time, but figured he’d just get a lecture. He wanted something more real than that.

Jay told his mom about a party he had recently attended where some of the kids were smoking pot. Jay had never smoked pot before and he was tempted to give it a try, but he declined because he thought about what his parents might do if they found out. Now seemed like a good opportunity to find out exactly what they would do.

So he asked his mom.

She replied that she would be terribly disappointed in him. That she would feel she had failed as a parent. That she wouldn’t be able to trust him anymore. That she would seek professional counseling for the whole family.

Her answer seemed pretty clear, until–

A few weeks later, the family was packing for week in Boracay. As Jay was helping to load the last of the bags into the trunk, he knocked over his mom’s bag and a small pipe fell out. He picked it up and saw traces of pot left in the bottom of it. Now what?

All the way to the airport and in the plane, Jay replayed that moment of finding the pipe. The hypocrisy was too much. Now, what should he do? Should he stay quiet and assume this gives him a perfect excuse to smoke pot, or should he confront his mom and tell her what it felt like to find the pipe in her bag?

All Jay knew for sure was that he resented having to make this choice at all. If you were Jay what would you do? What are your choices and alternatives? Who are the stakeholders? What are the consequences of your actions?

- Confront the mother first before jumping into any conclusions (talk about it, hear her explanation)
- Does not like the fact that Jay's actions are highly dependent on the mom. (Does not mean one of them is doing it, the other has the right to = different circumstances)
- Given Jay is a minor, and if disadvantages are more than advantages, would go for the one with less consequence. Not to mention, given that he is a minor, his parents has the responsibility to guide him to the right path.
- There is the possibility that the mom felt that way because she knows, through her own experience, the negative effects of weed; thus, she felt like she had the right to tell her kid not to go down the same path.
- In addition to the possibility of the mom saying no to weed because of her own experience, as a child, we would have maybe appreciated the honesty more from her side of her experience, and would empathize as a child, and understood more why she is against it.
- To add, our parents also have issues and traumas na they are not comfortable to open but on our perspective as children, we would appreciate it if they would be willing to open up so we can understand better.
- You have the freedom to decide what is good and what is right. Jay should decided what's best for him independent from the actions of her mother.

Our group decided that it would be better for Jake to confront mom and tell her what it felt like to find the pipe in her bag instead of using it as an excuse to smoke pot. After all, if ever the reason why the mom told him not to try it is that she knows how additive of a substance it was and her own experience in it, we believe that Jake will have more reason not to use it as well and perhaps even develop a stronger bond with his mom in the process as it was somewhat implied that his mom might have been viewing herself as a disappointment because of her problems with the drug usage. Other than that, we believe that not confronting his mom can also cause some strain in his relationship with his family in the long run because this is a family issue so it will surely affect each member of the family. In addition, this confrontation might also push them to get the whole family to try professional counseling as it is possible that there are other underlying issues that causes the mom to continue using it and they need learn as a family what or what to do to cope up with this problem.

Option 1: Will not confront the mom immediately. We will consult another trusted adult for us to be able to see the issue from another trusted adult's perspective.

Pros - Less burden on Jay since there is a trusted adult in the family guiding him

Cons - Confidentiality issues

Option 2: Will immediately confront the mom. This can be our way of showing transparency and accountability.

Pros - This will allow Jay to hold his mom accountable and observe transparency and communication in their relationship.

Cons - Relationship may be affected

Option 3: Jay chooses to stay silent

Pros - Good relationship with mom, Jay will be able to smoke pot freely without the guilt

Cons - There is still a possibility that his mother's actions will still be revealed anyway through getting caught

Final answer: We will go for option 1. Since they are also on a vacation, we figured that it will probably be best to lay low initially and allow things to sink in for Jay to think of things through with the guidance of another adult family member. Same ending: the mother will be confronted anyway but this time, we have the guidance and support of another adult in the family
