In both the forming and storming stages of group development, the main goal is to get to know each other better. During the forming stage, members connect and begin to understand each other. In the storming stage, conflicts arise, providing opportunities for deeper understanding of each other's opinions and values.

Differences:

In the forming stage, members exhibit a degree of formality and politeness alongside a sense of caution and anxiety. They also embody optimism as they seek a sense of belonging within the group. In contrast, during the storming stage, tensions escalate, conflicts arise, and competition among members intensifies as disagreements become evident due to conflicting ideas.

Members start to interact and get to know each other during both stages.

Both stages involve the formation of structure within the group, whether it’s determining initial goals and objectives (Forming) or setting norms and standards of behaviour (Norming).

Leadership roles may arise in both stages, with some individuals stepping up to assist the group through the Forming process and others taking on leadership duties to facilitate the Norming.

Differences:

Forming is focused on individual roles while norming is focused on coming together and building trust.

Interaction in forming might be too formal or guarded while norming involves a greater level of familiarity and cooperation.

The two stages share similarities in terms of uncertainty. The forming stage is uncertain about how the group will work together, as each participant is still getting to know each other and no clear structure or roles have yet been established, whereas the performing stage may also involve uncertainty as the group may potentially experience challenges towards achieving their goals.

Differences:

The forming stage focuses on how to build effective relationships with each other and work together to attain common goals. In contrast, the performing stage focused on completing tasks and accomplishing goals efficiently.

Both can be defined as periods of transition in forming, individuals come together to create a new entity. In adjourning, the group disbands and transitions to separate paths. Both presents uncertainty during forming, members are unsure of their roles and the group's future. Similarly, in adjourning, there's uncertainty about what comes next after the group dissolves.

Differences:

The main focus of forming is about establishing a foundation. Members get to know each other, define goals, and establish roles. While in Adjourning it focuses on closure - wrapping up tasks, acknowledging achievements, and saying goodbye. The structure of both stages also differs in Forming; it involves setting ground rules, establishing communication channels, and building trust. While Adjourning prioritizes finalizing tasks, debriefing on the experience, and celebrating success.

The storming and norming stage is about learning to accept each other's different perspectives and ideas to achieve harmony within the group. 

Differences:

The norming stage is the phase wherein most of the conflicts formed from the storming phase will be resolved. Also, the roles of each member are still questionable under the storming stage that later will be established in the norming phase. 

In the storming and performing stage, members attempt to offer their ideas or suggestions. Hence, conflict may still occur on both stages and feedback from each other is still considered a necessity to proceed on the next stage.

Differences:

Communication under performing stage is open and harmonious since the group finally becomes functional–group members are more comfortable to share ideas, skills, resources, etc. However, it remains difficult for everyone to understand each other and to come into a group consensus under the storming stage since this is still an adjustment phase.

In both the storming and adjourning stage, involved members are allowed to contribute their inputs on what such a stage should accomplish at a given point in time.

Differences:

As the storming stage poses conflicts, members at this stage often feel defensive, tense, jealous, and are uncertain whether their attitudes agree with the group’s mission or purpose. Whereas in the adjourning stage, members are often glad that their task is over and oftentimes, they also feel sad as the bond they have formed will now come into termination. 

There is an acceptance of differing opinions and an aim to achieve established goals.

Require trust among team members.

Team members feel a sense of belonging.

Differences:

Norming promotes group cohesion and cooperation while performing showcases the team's independent organization.

In norming, leaders become facilitators; in performing, they shift to coaching for skill and leadership growth.

Represent periods of transition in group dynamics when the composition or organization of the group changes.

Promote group reflection on its experiences and knowledge.

Leaders must sensitively guide group members through transitions with respect and compassion.

Differences:

Norming promotes collaboration and goal-setting within the group while adjourning indicates the end of the task or the connection among members itself.

During norming members feel reassured and like they belong, while members commonly feel relief or sadness during adjourning.

Both stages occur towards the end of group development, nearing completion of tasks or objectives. Members in both stages share a sense of accomplishment as milestones are achieved. Also, both stages involve a shift in dynamics from task-focused work to preparing for closure and dissolution, emphasizing common experiences as groups approach the end of their collaboration.

Differences:

The performing stage represents a mature, task-focused group with effective collaboration and a shared vision, whereas the adjourning stage represents the conclusion of activities for temporary groups, resulting in emotional closure among members. During the adjourning stage, leaders and members reflect on successes and handle emotions through activities such as debriefing and celebration, which mark the end of the group's journey.
