Evolution of the North Korean State

From our viewpoint, North Korea will most likely remain unstable and a concern as long as it keeps its hardcore dictatorship. Political and economical is required to see any change for a solution. North Korea has always relied on nepotism, its known no form way of government. Any dispute against the system is extremely frowned upon in the regime. In order to improve their economy, North Korea would require economic assistance, historically, an ultimate solution would be for the north and south to unify but there's little hope for that seeing as the aftermath of the Korean War left lots of resentment an grudge. Both sides have come to distrust and dislike each other politically plus both immense differences in their societies have created cultural differences.

North Korean Nuclear Proliferation

Problems with nuclear weapons have been a problem for ages. General Douglas (American commander) suggested the use of nuclear weapons to end the war, nuclear weapons were later stationed on South Korea which could have been a big motive for Kim II Sung to begin a nuclear program. This program continues to be ongoing, although North Korea signed the NPT (Nuclear- Non Proliferation), they've threatened to remove their membership which led to the Framework Agreement which lasted 1994-2002. North Korea has gone back and fourth on these non proliferation agreements, nonetheless they are standing their ground on keeping their nuclear program and have shown no sign in getting rid of it. Because nuclear weapons are extremely dangerous, they need to be held under wraps but since North Korea is such a small country they use these weapons as a threat, prestige and compensation. For the U.S. it results as a top priority on their list of issues with the DPK as well as an annoyance to deal with.

North Korea as a Unique State

Because of its location in East Asia, North Korea becomes a matter for the U.S. foreign policy concern. North Korea's unique governance form as well as its difficulty of influencing its regime and its possession of nuclear weapons, these factors make this place more impactful and important also, North Korea is aware of this which makes them a difficult antagonist to deal with. It's location is also key because it sits in the middle of the most powerful members of the Asian balance which are China and Russia to its north, the ROK to its south, and Japan to its east.Since North Korea is the smallest compared to its neighbors, nuclear weapons prevents them from being powerless. What also makes it unique is their leadership; Kim II Sung's nepotism has lasted three generations.North Korea remains isolated from society being ruled harshly, their isolation has resulted to its extreme nationalism

The Physical Setting

Being the 98th largest country and having no known sources of petroleum or natural gas to from its own development, it is also isolated from the rest of the world. Its physical setting adds on to its issues, of course what is most significant is its poverty while in comparison the south is more flourishing. As of 2010, there resides about 22.7 million citizens who exist on a per capita of $1,800. Meanwhile the south's 48.6 citizens have a $28,100 per capita. It is estimated that around plus two million citizens have died since the mid 1900's due to food shortages in the north. The division of the country (to north and south, 38th parallel) in 1948, there has been restricted contact between both sides. There are clear contrasts between the two sides, economic and political. The south being a more prosperous rich, and capitalist economy and the north stagnated, underdeveloped, and socialist economy.

North Korea: A Sketch

North Korea is by far one of the most unfriendliest countries, Korea for the most part was a unified kingdom. Between 1910 and 1945, Korea existed as a single entity. Postwar geopolitics interfered with it remaining whole. When Joseph Stalin discovered nuclear weapons he agreed on using them to end the war, his price for doing this was an occupation zone in Korea after the war. This is when Korea became divided, even though America no longer needed the occupation zone, American dominated and Soviet dominated were implemented. Without a say, Koreans were then separated into two separate states. After the war ended a boundary (the 38th parallel) between the two states was established and became the the most heavily armed frontier.
