For a while, the Song dynasty was able to fight off their enemies. They had better weapons and better materials to fight them off. However, after a while, the revolution in thought ended because they didn't create or inspire any new revolutionary ideas. Instead, they continued to focus on what they had (Comparative Timelines). The Mongols ended up conquering the Song dynasty because of this (Comparative Timelines).

Islam

In Islam, scientists and thinkers separated their religion from their science. Nobody had ever thought, of this before, and Islam was the first to do this. Islam found out how to advance their science without being conflicted with their religion (Islam: Empire of Faith). It was common for civilizations to assume that religion was science. However, Islam questioned that and started what science would eventually become.

Ms. Waller: This is close, but not totally accurate. Islam viewed knowledge as a way to get closer to god. While you are correct that Islam allowed advancement without it conflicting against their religion, the reason why is a bit off. However, I think that more has to do with your writing than your lack of knowledge. I know you know this stuff!!

In the Song Dynasty, the Revolution in Thought was caused by the many wars that happened in China. Whenever China was attacked, they had to advance to defend themselves. (“AFE: The Song Dynasty in China”). They had to find new ways of fighting to win the wars. They had to go against how people usually fight wars, and find new ways of fighting.

Europe

In Europe, the church had strict ideas about God and God's effect on people. The church believed that God was the answer to every question. However, at one point people started to question if that was even true. For example, the church said that the Earth was in the middle of the Solar System. However, to most that did not sound correct, so they defied the church's commands and looked to find the right answer ("Galileo"). It became a revolution when people started to find answers other than the answers the church was providing.

Weapons

China was being attacked and had no way to defend itself. They tried to fight with swords and spears, although they needed something more. So they invented gunpowder which led to bigger and better weapons (China Class Wipebook).

Paper

Paper was created in the Islamic Empire (Islam: Empire of Faith). They made it as a way to spread ideas quickly and efficiently. Then the Song Dynasty took this paper and created the printing press (“AFE: The Song Dynasty in China”).

Telescope

Galileo created the telescope which was used to create new ideas about science. The church tried to shut down any idea about space. They thought that Earth was in the center of the solar system and the sky was the heavens. Galileo created the telescope as a way to see what happens in space ("Galileo"). Galileo created more new ideas because of this telescope. These new ideas led to more ideas from others which sustained a revolution in thought.

Europe

Europe had a very successful revolution in thought. However, they had an obstacle. This obstacle was the church, which banned ideas that conflicted with what it believed. The only way that Europe could continue to battle the power of the church, was through people who were able to continue to build new ideas and inspire more people, despite the church's opposition. For example, Galileo was imprisoned by the church for his theories about the solar system. These theories went against the church's philosophy, that God was in the center of everything, and everything was about God's creation. Once he wrote these theories, he would write them and spread them so that others could read them. Then once others were educated, there was a backlash against the church ("Galileo"). Thinkers like Galileo persevered and inspired people to continue creating ideas which led Europe to sustain their Revolution in thought for a very long time.

Islamic Empire

The Islamic empire did a great job of building off others' ideas to build up their civilization. For example, they created innovations from the Greeks and the Romans. They learned their language and were inspired to create their own, innovations in medicine, science, architecture, and more (Islam: Empire of Faith). They were able to then spread more ideas, throughout the empire and motivate more people to create. Sadly, the Islamic empire was conquered by the Mongols. However, their revolution in thought stayed strong because some of the Mongol people converted to the Islam religion (Muslim) (Comparative Timelines). Due to the Islamic Empire's ability to progress their ideas within there culture, they had a successful revolution in thought.
