Marcus begs his mom once again if he can stay up 10 minutes later. Thinking nothing of it, Lucy accepts once again. 10 more minutes of video games won't cause any harm, right? Marcus thanks his mom and goes back to the basement. After a week, those extra 10 minutes were just a part of the routine. Tuesday, November 7th. 11:34 AM. Lucy answers a phone call. She is told that her son took the lives of 3 people, and all it took was 10 minutes.

"Ninety percent of movies, 68% of video games, and 60% of TV shows show some depictions of violence," says Caroline Knorr, parenting editor for Common Sense Media, the online resource for vetting kids media.

Sasha Emmons from Parenting.com writes: "Kids 8 and under watch an average of 1 hour and 40 minutes of TV or DVDs a day; older kids watch an average of 4 hours daily. Most kids start playing video games around age 4, according to their research."

Media violence has a direct impact on the youth. Being exposed to this kind of violence makes these kids want to recreate what they see on their screens. Killing people, stealing objects, driving carelessly and destroying everything you come in contact with is very common and easy to get away with in these popular video games. This is exactly what happened to Marcus. This young boy ultimately became obsessed with this violence and was stripped of his morals. Marcus' mom should of restricted the time her son dedicated to these games and discussed the violent content with him.

Watching television is one of the many causes that influences physical violence. According to the Nielson data collected in 1993, a child will watch on average 2 to 3 hours of television per day. This is equivalent to 21 hours per week; these numbers don’t even include video games. Contrary to what you may believe, children are exposed to inappropriate scenery. A report from the American psychiatric association (1996), by the time you hit adulthood, you will have witnessed 200 000 violent acts and 16 000 televised murders. This is far from healthy.

The constant exposure to acts of violence on televised networks doesn’t leave you unaffected. You think you will be left unaffected by this, but the national institute of mental health says otherwise. Viewing violent scenes on a regular basis can make them blinded to the consequences of aggressive behavior. On the other hand, viewers can also become paranoid and anxious by believing what they see on screen happens in the real world. Should someone really feel scared to walk down the street?
