Hedy Strnad was a young fashion jewish fashion designer in Czechoslovakia. In an attempt to obtain visas to America her husband sent a letter to their cousin in America, he included some of Hedy's sketches to prove she would be employable in America.

In 1900, a Jewish Lithuanian immigrant named Meshe David Osinsky arrived in Britain alone at the age of 19. He set up a clothes-peddling business, adopted the name Montague Burton and then opened a tailoring store in Chesterfield, a northern industrial town. By 1939, Burton had 595 stores offering custom suits for men all around the nation. The business produced a third of the demobilization suits (given to soldiers who were going home) and a quarter of all British military uniforms by the time World War II broke out, turning it into the cost-effective brand it is today.

She found a gold coin which she pocketed, a dangerous decision which could've easily gotten her killed. She used the gold coin to buy bread and then traded the food for the scarf to cover her shaven head.
