Douglass refers to this memory of his mother's death to introduce sympathy into readers. Most would say that they would not feel like their mother's death was similar to a stranger's. He brings this experience up to represent how different his life was to others.

Douglass counteracts the idea that slavery should be justified by providing this example. During the 1800's involving slavery, people were referring to the bible on how to live their lives. However, there is a story that explains how descendants of Ham were to be slaves. Therefore, mulatto slaves were not complete descendants of Ham, and should not be slaves.

He reveals, "I have often been awakened at the dawn of day by the most heart-rending shrieks of an own aunt of mine, whom he used to tie up to a joist, and whip upon her naked back till she was literally covered with blood" (3).

Douglass' experience witnessing his aunt's brutal beating most definitely shows his credibility. If Douglass did not provide examples during his time of a slave, then it would not be a narrative. However, this narrative is real and proves it by telling of his gruesome experiences.
