Mycenae- it was a fortified state first discovered by Heinrich Schliemann the Mycenaean civilization reached its high in 1400 and 1200 BC and its fortified centers were built on hills surrounded by stone walls
Sparta- the city state was located on the banks of Eurotas River in Laconia. In 650 BC it became the most dominant military land-power in Greece. Spartan women were the first groups to have more freedom due to the fact that men tended to constantly be in battle
Athens- By 700 BC the city state of Athens had very high naval powers in Greece. Athens was located on the peninsula of Attica. There was an assembly between the citizens of Athens and they eventually created the Athenian Democracy whilst looking for a fair way to create and pass laws.
Classical Greece- the period of Greek history from 500 BC to 338 BC. In this period Democracy flourished in Athens. The Pelopponesian War in 431 BC between Athens and Sparta weakened the Greek city states and caused a divide between them. In this era the Greeks had much intellectual and cultural growth, these developments are the main sources as western culture. In this era their philosophy, art, and creation of dramas, shaped the civilization we live in today.
Hellenistic Era- the Hellenistic Era expanded the Greek language and ideas to parts of Southwest Asia and beyond that were previously non-Greek. In this era unity was lost and 4 kingdoms were created Macedonia, Syria, Pergamum, and Egypt, which were all eventually conquered by the Romans. Art focused on more realistic and emotional interpretations in this era. The Hellenistic Era was key to the expansion of Greek ideas and culture as well as the home to many new scholars which included poets, writers, scientist, and philosophers.
