Henrietta Lacks was an African American woman born in 1920 in Virginia, United States, and is known for the fundamental role that her cells played in science and medicine. In 1951, Henrietta was diagnosed with cervical cancer and treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital, one of the few hospitals that served African Americans at the time. Without her knowledge or consent, doctors took a sample of her tumor for research.

Henrietta's cells, known as HeLa cells, turned out to have an unusual characteristic: they could divide and grow indefinitely outside the body, which is extremely rare, since most human cells die within a short time when removed. Thanks to their ability to reproduce continuously, HeLa cells became the first "immortal" human cell line.
