What gun control law currently exists? What could be done about gun violence?
In utah you can bring a gun as long as it is hidden. Kasey brings a gun so she wont just hope for the best so she fights back by bringing a gun to school. SHe trained by going to concealed classes and she went to a range gun class and shoot up lotta things to practice so she is comfortable. I think she is smart because she will threaten a shooter but she will obey the police.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trump arming teachers the guardian:
teachers, coaches would "shoot and that'll be the end of it"
Adept: skilled or professional
concealed carry gun: go special train with a gun on you and go to a gun free zone, YOU CAN ATTACK THERE.
If you post something about a "gun free zone" it will be an "invitation" to start Shooting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
armed teachers in schools... the guardian:
kyla ann?? : strong words for someone never understanding the reality of fire. a good guy with a gun is not going to save the day. you cant judge the situation. saying hes a coward or untrained is unfair, a gun is NOT a solution because it can cause more problems. Irresponsible to train using a gun and it takes HOURS AND HOURS to shoot EFFECTIVELY and CORRECTLY. NOT a one time training deal, theres a mindset issue. people have a class to teach each other and for learning purposes, NOT to be under learning how to use a gun.
Donald trump: the officer during duty did not have the courage to do anything for five minutes.
romanticize: make better than it is
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inside school where teachers carry... The guardian:
Donald trump would give bonus $$ to learn how to use a gun. A school in texas are already using a concealed firearm.
People dont think teachers should be armed but should be teaching

There needs to be something where a school faculty member (preferably school security) who have something to restrict someone who poses a threat to the school and it's students.
Martha MacCullum, a teacher from Utah, chose to bring a gun to school because when there is school shooter on campus, the teachers will put themselves in front of their students to protect them which is viewed as a heroic act. And with a gun, the teacher can fight back to defend his/her students.
If there is the school shooter Martha says that she will tell the shooter that she has a gun and if the police knock on the door she will put her gun away. (Video: News Report)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trump talks about where a gym teacher had a gun in his locker so he could prevent the school shooter from doing any harm.  But, he says that if the gym teacher had the gun on him and not on the locker,  the school shooter would be prevented earlier which is a good thing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This video talks about a police officer who was outside of a school shooting and didn't do anything to apprehend the school shooter.
This person says that Trump is using big words because he wasn't "walking the talk".
You can't judge ones knowledge of a certain thought.
Having armed guards and guns at school isn't the solution to the amount of schoo shootings problem.
The armed guard didn't do anything to apprehend the school shooter.
As a former member of the military, she thinks that having more guards isn't the solution because it will take thousands of hours to shoot the gun correctly as a teacher. And teachers, you will get a different mind-set from teaching and instructing a class to apprehending someone who poses as a threat to the school or any of it's students.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trump proposes that teachers who learn how to use guns will receive bonuses.
EQ ideas:
- Would more guns prevent gun deaths?
- Do more gun laws prevent gun deaths?
- Should schools arm teachers and guards?
- Is prohibiting gun ownership compatible with the 2nd Amendment?
____________________________________________________________________________________
- Kasey, a teacher, carries a gun in school so she has something to defend herself and her students
- took concealed classes and ranger gun class
- if the police comes she will just say she has a gun
- utah has a law so that teachers can carry a gun in school
my thoughts: I think that she is smart for caring a gun because the school doesn't have an actual plan when there is a gun shooting. This shows how much of a good person she is to make sure she has a way to defend herself and her students when a school shooting does occur.
____________________________________________________________________________________
- Trump said that the school would no longer be a gun free zone
- when school is a gun free zone it would attract shootings because the school would have no way to defend themselves
my thoughts: I agree that gun free zone schools would attract people to shoot up the school.
___________________________________________________________________________________
-  Trump said that the police/guards that was outside of the school shooting, he didn't do anything. Said he didn't have the courage or do his job and they didn't react properly.
- The marine biologist/teacher said that Trump shouldn't have said those things since he never been under attack. Calling him a coward is unfair. Having armed guard isn't a solution because it would cause a lot of complications. REASONS: Training would be hard because it would take hours and hours to shoot the gun effectively. A school is not a place for guns but to learn. It's too much of a responsibility to be able to use a gun. Teachers wouldn't be prepared or have the correct mindset for handling a gun.
my thoughts:
____________________________________________________________________________________
- Texas school is letting teachers use guns to defend themselves
- Students said they feel say when the teachers carry a gun
my thoughts:
____________________________________________________________________________________
So the summary about the teacher who has brought a gun to school in order to protect her students as well as herself in case a certain someone comes in and decides to shoot up the school, I feel like that is an extreme measure. Even though school shootings are becoming a bigger and bigger issue, I still feel like there are other things that we can do that can protect students and adults without using force like guns.
In the next video, there is also another lady who gives her opinion about Donald Trump's opinion on the deputy who was near the school shooting in Parkland. I agree with Donald Trump that having a trained police officer who has worked hard to get to a time like this when people need his help. I agree that he could've done something for the school and the students to prevent the damage that would've taken place. However, I also understand their viewpoint that being in actal gunfire is a lot more different than just training for it. It means putting your life on the line for other students and people.
Essential question: What are some things we can do to prevent school shootings and keep students safe?
-A teacher in Utah has a gun and brings it to school thinking that this will help protect her students and herself. She says that if a gunman shows up or a drill happens, she'll say that she has a gun and if it is a gunman she will hope that he or she will just turn back around and leave.
-The next video talks about what the professor thinks about donald trump's statement about the security guard on campus while the shooting was happening. She says that having security guards on campus isn't always the main answer. The security guard might have been assessing the event. She shames Donald Trump for calling the guard or officer a coward since Donald Trump doesn't know what it's like being under fire or under pressure. She thinks that it's too much time and effort to train teachers or other police to train even more on top of other things they do.
-Another video says that Trump agrees that teachers should undergo training to be able to be armed. He says that he"ll give teachers that train bonuses. A Texas school already allows teachers to carry guns. Some students feel protected with their teachers having a gun. They think that this'll protect them.
~One thing we can do is come up with more or stricter laws on guns.
~Another thing we can do is have security guards on school's openings that check whoever comes into school.
I think that some people agree and others disagree with the fact that teachers are allowed to bring a gun to school. A teacher in Utah brings a gun to school now everyday, after what happened with the Sandy shooting. I believe that some people might agree with this woman because if there is another shooting at their school, she can fight the shooter instead of hiding in the corner trying to protect her children. However, some people think that this is not safe because having a gun at school violates rules, and can fall into the wrong hands.
A teacher in Utah, Kasey, is armed with a gun because she wants to be able to protect her students and herself from school shootings. She was inspired to get a gun after the Sandy Hook school shooting.
Donald Trump is saying that a gun free zone is an imitation to telling someone with a gun to come. During the Florida school shooting there was a police officer at the school for 5 minutes but he didn't do anything
A marine/ a college teacher and Rick Scott( a governor) oppose the idea of  arming teachers with guns. The college teacher doesn't think Donald Trump has the right to say anything about the police officer because he doesn't know how it feels to actually be under fire. She thinks that this idea of arming guards is not a solution because having more guns on campus may not make the situation better. It would actually causes more difficulties. This is because it would be hard for teachers spend specifically on gun training do to their schedules. And even with training, you can't always perfect the way of using a gun.  It is too much of a responsibility to have teachers to learn how to use a gun (which takes more than 1,000 hours) and teach at the same time. A teacher could accidently arm fire to an innocent person. Some schools are already using guns such as Calbourn in Texas. Some students feel safe with the fact that teachers will be able to protect them if they have guns in school.
Women’s March Youth EMPOWER is calling for students, teachers, school administrators, parents and allies to take part in a #NationalSchoolWalkout for 17 minutes at 10am across every time zone on March 14, 2018 to protest Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods. We need action. Students and allies are organizing the national school walkout to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship. Students and staff have the right to teach and learn in an environment free from the worry of being gunned down in their classrooms or on their way home from school.Parents have the right to send their kids to school in the mornings and see them home alive at the end of the day.We are not safe at school. We are not safe in our cities and towns. Congress must take meaningful action to keep us safe and pass federal gun reform legislation that address the public health crisis of gun violence. We want Congress to pay attention and take note: many of us will vote this November and many others will join in 2020. Join us in saying #ENOUGH! The walkout is a call to Congress to "pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship."
The walkout, organized by Women’s March Youth EMPOWER, the youth affiliate of Women’s March, is one of several demonstrations planned by a variety of groups to call for action on gun control — another is the March For Our Liveson March 24.
" It’s going to last for 17 minutes to commemorate the 17 lives lost on February 14, and we are asking people to wear orange in solidarity. We want each school to spend those 17 minutes doing whatever they feel comfortable with and whatever they think is going help them heal most and whatever they think is going to make the most impact" ( Cate Whitman).
" Orange is the national color for awareness for gun violence" ( WInter Minisee).
" Florida lawmakers gave final passage to a $400 million gun control and school safety bill on Wednesday in defiance of the National Rifle Association, which opposed the legislation’s firearm restrictions. The bipartisan vote came three weeks after a gunman killed 17 people in a rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. The legislation, which passed the State Senate on Monday and now heads to the governor, would raise the minimum age to purchase any firearm to 21 from 18; impose a three-day waiting period on gun purchases; fund school police officers and mental health counselors; and allow local school districts and sheriffs to arm certain school personnel. It would also ban so-called bump stocks, which make guns fire faster, and give law enforcement more power to commit people deemed a threat" ( The New York Times).
17 victims
Alyssa Alhadeff, 14
         " Alyssa, 14, was a student at Stoneman Douglas and a soccer player for Parkland Travel Soccer.
Lori Alhadeff, Alyssa's mother, told HLN she dropped her daughter off at school Wednesday and said, "I love you." "Alyssa was a beautiful, smart, talented, successful, awesome, amazing soccer player. You'll be greatly missed, Alyssa. We love you so much. Feis, 37, suffered a gunshot wound and died after he was rushed into surgery, Lehtio said.
"He died the same way he lived -- he put himself second," she said. "He was a very kind soul, a very nice man. He died a hero" (CNN).
Jaime, 14
" My heart is broken. We appreciate all of the calls and messages and we apologize for not reacting to everyone individually," he added. "Hugs to all and hold your children tight" ( CNN).
"The Republican-led Florida House passed a school safety package that includes an unprecedented tightening of gun control regulations on Wednesday. The close vote placed reluctant GOP legislators in a vice between browbeating chamber leadership and the powerful National Rifle Association. The 67-50 vote was also tough for House Democrats, who earlier in the day decided to take a caucus position against the bill because it would allow for armed educational personnel in schools. Of 76 House Republicans, 57 voted in favor of the bill, with 19 against it. Of the 41 House Democrats, 10 voted yes and 31 voted no.
If teachers were allowed to have guns, how will we know that they will be responsible at using the gun for good effects only? There was a cop outside the school, and he did not do anything while the shooting was going on. However, the marine lady says that you have no right to criticize a human being that is faced with a decision of life and death, when you have not gone through the situation yourself (to Donald Trump). Having armed guns on campus might not solve the problems. 1. takes thousands of hours to train to shoot a gun effective or the correct way. 2. this is too much too handle when they already have so much. 3. their mindset and mentality might not be prepared because it is not like they want to come to school ready to fight.
"Gun free zone" Donald Trump says it's an invitation for school shooters to harm other people on campus.
Governor of florida opposes the idea of arming teachers.
Former NRA member/Ex marine/now teacher says she disagrees with donald trump for his discouraging words toward the security guard that stayed outside for 5 minutes during school shooting. Says "Donald Trump hasn't been under pressure" "has no idea what it feels like" . She says it's unfair for Donald Trump to call the security guard a coward. She is against the idea of arming teachers/security guards. "takes thousands of hours to shoot a gun properly" she also states the mindset you would need to accomplish for this type of situation. Training for the situation vs. actually being in the type of situation is completely different things.
Emma Gonzales: "The NRA pays Donald Trump $30 million divided by the number of gun shot victims it is $5,800 per person" as mass shootings go up around the state, that money per person goes down In Florida you do not need a gun permit to buy a gun , and after you buy a gun you do not need to renew a license to keep that weapon , can with held a shot gun in a home without license. Trump says  how this is a great tragedy and how he is doing everything he can to promote another mass shooting even though, Australia had one mass shooting in 1999 and since they introduced gun safety they have not had one since, Japan has not had one mass shooting . Canada has had 3 mass shootings the UK has had only 1 ever since they introduced gun safety they have not had one since. A year ago Donald Trump appealed an amendment that would have made it easier to appeal gun laws for people with mental issues to be able to buy a gun in the first place. "The students should have reported the gun shooters 'unusual' behavior to teachers or authorities, to prevent such incidents from happening" They did. Multiple times.
EQ:  Does bullying play a role in school violence?
-there have been about 50 school shootings that have left dozens of children, teens and others dead, and a good number of these were perpetrated by people who may have been bullied in school.
-Bullying victims are twice as likely to bring weapons to school.
-A new study finds that 200,000 teens who have been bullied bring a gun or other weapon to high school every month.
- Many students who are bullied mercilessly often see no way out except the death. They develop a “him or me” kind of mentality, and a single act of bullying could set an individual off.
-
Argument: Schools should use more effective ways to make school safer.
Agree:
- Schools will be safer for students (NY Times)
- Not putting enough effort to make schools safe will lead to more deaths (CNN)
- Students won't have to have anxiety when they go to school. (CNN)
Disagree:
- Using more effective ways to make school safe will be expensive. (NY Times)
- We can't tell whether or not it will be effective. (The Atlantic)
Notes:
- Since armed teachers will probably not do well in an active shooter situation, it’s best to not arm them at all.
           ~ According to Brookings Education, “Professional police officers hit their intended targets less than 20 percent of the time in training situations of an active shooter. Armed teachers will certainly have even lower accuracy rates, and where will all of those stray bullets end up?”
- Lock down drills should happen more often just to make students get used to lock down drills.
           ~ According to New York Times, “Typically, a gunman will not try to kick in a closed door, but will look for one with a crack of light showing.”
- Identifying students who may have mental illness is difficult but helping out every student who is mentally ill will prevent future school shootings.
           ~According to New York Times, “Social Media can be an early warning system, the experts say.
