LGBTQ is an acronym that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning.

Lesbian

Refers to the female homosexual, indicating a female who experiences romantic or sexual attraction with another female.

Gay

Primarily refers to the trait of being homosexual. This term is often used to describe the homosexual males.

Transgender

An umbrella term that is used to describe people whose has a gender identity that is incompatible with the sex that he/she were assigned at birth: male, female or intersex.

Questioning

Describes someone who is questioning about their sexual orientation or gender identity.

What is Pride Parade?

Pride parade is an outdoor event that celebrates LGBTQ social and self-acceptance, achievements , legal right and pride. The event is also a demonstration for LGBT legal rights such as same-sex marriage. Most of the pride events occur annually and some of them take place around June which commemorate to the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City.

Shang, Spring & Autumn, Warring States Period and Han Dynasty

Back then during Ancient China times, homosexuality is commonly found in the society. For the history of gay (男色), it started as early as from Shang dynasty, to Spring & Autumn period, Warring States period and Han Dynasty. During this period, gay often been found in the upper social class (the king/royal family). Therefore, stated in the book “The Intrigues of the Warring States”, a collection of political advice and stories from before the Han Dynasty, gay were known as Duan Xiu (断袖), Fen Tao (分桃), Long Yang (龙阳), and An Ling (安凌). There were 4 respective romance stories that came along with these 4 names, however the only similarity between the 4 stories are they all happened between a king/royal family and his male partner (not from royal family). Besides that, during the Shang dynasty, the concept of male empress were first introduced by Emperor Wen of Chen (陈文帝), due to him proposing to his male partner, Han Zi Gao (韩子高) to be his queen. However, this incident did not turn up due to various reasons such as strong objections from the ministers as well as the feudalism.

During the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern dynasty, gay culture started to infuse from the upper social class to lower classes. Male prostitution were introduced. However, for the following dynasties (Tang dynasty & Five dynasties), gay culture started to decline due to acceptance of cultural influences regarding sexuality from the Western and Central Asia. During these periods, the first negative word about gay homosexuality, Ji Jian (鸡奸) was introduced to connote the illicit homosexuality. Moreover, laws against male prostitution were being introduce as well during Tang dynasty.

Gay Marriage in Ming Dynasty

Moving forward to Ming dynasty, gay marriage were introduced and practiced by the common people, especially in Fujian province. The gay marriage were known as Qi Xiong Di (契兄弟), where in this relationship, the older male will be called as Qi Xiong (契兄 - adoptive older brother) and played the more masculine role, while the younger male will be Qi Di (契弟 - adoptive younger brother), who plays the more feminine role. Their wedding ceremony were no difference with the normal male-female couple ones, and the Qi Di will later move into the Qi Xiong’s family. According to the history, the Qi Di will be treated well by Qi Xiong’s family, and both of the males can later marry another woman in order to procreate.

Lesbian Marriage in Ming Dynasty

Other than that, lesbian marriage was also being introduced and practiced during the Ming dynasty in Guangdong province, where it was known as Jin Lan Qi (金兰契). In this marriage, the female couples will promise with each other to not marry a man, where this was called Zi Shu (自梳). Reasons that lead to this lesbian marriage is because most of the women in Guangdong province had achieved financial freedom, where they can earn a living for themselves and do not need to rely on a man to survive. Other than that, it was part of their action to go against the patriarchy system, to achieve freedom in marriage.

Other names for lesbian was known as Dui shi (对食) and Mo Jing (磨镜). For Dui Shi, it is an earlier form of lesbian marriage, which was commonly found happen in the imperial court, among the court ladies. Dui Shi was later improvised to the marriage between court lady and eunuch.

As a result, gays were heavily harassed and discriminated by the society. Certain laws against homosexuality were also been introduced, which was know as Hooliganism law. These laws were applied to ban on private, adult, non-commercial and consensual homosexual conduct, or easy to say, MSM (men who have sex with men) action. This action had indeed persecuted the gays and deprived their freedom & rights for love. For lesbian on the other hand, WSW (women who have sex with women) action were not been convicted to the hooliganism law due to sex can only be defined when there is present of male.

In the 1950s and 60s, the American legal system was deeply discriminative towards homosexuals. Holding hands, kissing and any public intimacy between same-sex couples were strictly forbidden. Showing up at a gay bar would also constitute as a reason for arrest.
Those who are involved in the LGBTQ community might lose their job opportunities and being publicly disgraced. Some would be sent to mental institutes, some were forced to undergo unscientific and inhumane conversion therapies including electric shock, medication and even chemical castration.
In 1967, CBS News Network commissioned a survey to review the general public attitude towards homosexuality. Most of the Americans considered homosexuality is more harmful to society that adultery, abortion or prostitution.

Economy Reform and Development Era (1970s) and afterwards

Later on, during Deng Xiaoping’s Economy Reform and Development Era (1970s), things started to become better. In 1980s, greater public discussions and research towards homosexuality were permitted. The society slowly gained more understanding and acceptance towards homosexual. Therefore, in year 1997, the Hooliganism law towards gays were revised and eliminated. In the year of 2001, homosexuality had been formally removed from the list of mental illnesses in Chinese Classification of Mental Disorder. Furthermore, for transgenders who had undergone surgery, they can apply for a change in their sex at the Ministry of State Security starting from the year of 2002. On the marriage side, same sex marriage are still not allowed in China until today.

Stonewall Uprising
Police raids on gay bars were conducted as usual, but on that particular night, the people decided to fight back.
Policemen showed in the midnight of Saturday, June 28th, 1969 without giving early tip-off to the Stonewall Inn management.
Therefore, the patrons were have to undergo checking and verifications by the police. However, some people who dressed in women refused to follow the female police officer for a sex verification, while the males refused to produce their identification.
The police arrested the workers for selling alcohol without a license, people who violated the state's gender-appropriate statute (cross-dressing) and roughed up many of the patrons.
The people that gathered outside the bar later gone berserk with the police's action of arresting the homosexuals. As a result, they started to attack the police.
The policemen tried to restrain the crowd by knocking down a few of them, but it had turned out inciting more of the bystanders to gather around.
The policemen were outnumbered by about 500-600 people in this riot.

Why is the song a "GAY ANTHEM"

The lyrics are not more related to the LGBT but it is one of the classic gay anthem. The song might not be necessarily refer to the queers, but in the beginning, Dancing Queen was popular in the gay clubs.
ABBA was at the forefront in supporting LGBTQ+, thus ‘Dancing Queen’ became an obvious choice for inclusion in the gay anthem list.
The song has been adopted by LGBT community and according to Mojo magazine, it has remained one of the most ubiquitous “gay anthem” in the LGBT community.
“We found out quite early that Dancing Queen had become an anthem and we were very proud that we’ve been chosen by the community,” Björn Ulvaeus tells us of the outpouring of love to ABBA from LGBTQ fans.

In the same year, Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights (TAPCPR)(台湾伴侣权益推动联盟) also proposed 3 draft bills for Diversified Family Formation which included Marriage Equality, Civil Partnership System and Multi-person Family System to Legislative Yuan.

In 2013, Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights (TAPCPR)(台湾伴侣权益推动联盟) had conducted a poll to investigate public’s opinion towards same-sex marriage legalization. Results had shown that more than 50% of the people who signed the survey supported same-sex marriage.

In the same year, Chi Chia-Wei (祁家威) had his second request to marry a man after year 1986, but being rejected again due to the Civil Law that marriage should occur between a man and a woman. He then requested for a petition to Ministry of Interior but being turned down. Later, he proceeded with administrative litigation but failed, thus allowing him to apply for his second constitutional interpretation regarding same-sex marriage.

In May 2015, Taipei, Taichung and Gaohsiung city were first open for same-sex partner card registration. This card is an official ID card and it has the basic personal information of two people's name, birth dates, and birthplace. This card however does not have legal binding force; but it can be used to verify the relationship between a same sex couple. The registered partners were allowed enjoy the welfare of being able to sign surgical consent (use in medical emergency case) and to apply for family care leave.

In August 2015, Chi Chia-Wei (祁家威) formally apply for interpretation request to the Justice regarding same-sex marriage, together with the support from Department of Civil Affairs, Taipei and New Taipei City Government.

In Jan 2016, Tsai Ing-Wen (蔡英文) won the Presidential election and became the first female president of Taiwan. She and her party, Democratic Progressive Party, supports LGBTQ rights.

In year 2016, same-sex marriage was under the process of being legalized in the cabinet. When this news was announced in the public, it had triggered the Catholic groups whom had significant influence towards the society to react. The Catholic groups began to protest and speak out against the process of legalizing same-sex marriage in front of Legislative Yuan. They were however met with huge crowds of counter-protesters (which were the LGBT supporters) that waved rainbow flags and showed support for the process.

On 29^th October 2016, the biggest Pride Parade in Asia were held in Taipei, Taiwan, where it was participated by about 80 thousands people from Taiwan and around Asia. This Pride Parade had shown the participant’s determination to fight for legalization of same-sex marriage in Taiwan.

On the 10^th December 2016, over 200 thousands protesters gathered in front of the presidential palace in Taipei's Ketagalan Boulevard to support the bill to legalize same-sex marriage. The bill would remove specific terms for genders (man and woman) and change the word to two people.

On the 25^th May 2017, the Supreme Court of the Republic of China (Taiwan) ruled that Civil Laws, J.Y. Interpretation No.748 preventing same-sex couples from marrying were unconstitutional. They required the Legislative Yuan to pass and enact new laws amending the issue within two years. The court also ruled that if they were to fail to amend the marriage laws within two years, same-sex couples will be able to register their marriage by going through current marriage registration processes at any household registration office.

On 17^th May 2019, same-sex marriage was legalize in Taiwan and became effective since 24 May 2019, including rights in areas such as taxes, insurance and child custody.

This song, Dancing Queen projected a relaxing vibe that encourages the youngsters to throw away their fears and worries, to appreciate the current happy moment as well as to enjoy the music and start dancing. This song was intended to motivate the LGBT community to not hide or ashamed of themselves due to their sexuality differences with others, or to take people’s destructive criticism into heart, but on the other hand, try to be proud of themselves and to show their own uniqueness to the world. No matter who you are, what your gender or sexuality is, everyone has their freedom and rights to chase for happiness. Thus, just move your body around with the music, socialize freely with the people around and be happy, regardless of what others may think of you.

For this song, we choose it as our investigation towards the relationship between love and gender. In our society, we can observed that most of the romantic relationships occurred between a man and a woman, but what about a romantic relationship that happens between two person of the same gender? For a long period of time, the society had this fixed mindset that romantic relationship should occur between the opposite genders, as the majority/mainstream. Thus, homosexuality, or having sexual interest with same sex were being seen as abnormal, metamorphosis or mental illness that must be corrected or “cured” through inhuman and cruel treatments. Beside, the negative thoughts and words that were used to towards the homosexuals tend to be ironic and hurting. Both of the inhuman treatments and discrimination from the society had indeed damaged their mental health, dignity and self-esteem as a person who actually did nothing wrongly.

Hence, through this song, we hope to speak out for the LGBT community, to raise awareness in the society towards this "minorities" , and to encourage a change the society's old perception towards the LGBTs.
We hope that the society could start learning to appreciate the homosexual romantic relationship that serves as a minority from a different perspective. Instead of criticizing them, we could support them by giving encouragements and our best wishes when they finally decided to come out from the closet because it takes tons of courage for them to admit their own sexuality and to even share it with people around when they are not sure of other people’s reaction. Moreover, we hope that the LGBT community could gain more courage to overcome the hardship while pursuing their love. They do not need to suppress their nature just to fit into the society’s expectation, instead, the society should be more open-minded to accepted them as part of the society. They should also practice self-love and self-worth as well as to believe in that they are born to love and be loved.

The Concept of Our Group Name

Prism is a 3-dimensional shape with identical shapes facing each other. An optical prism is a transparent optical element with flat, polished surfaces that could be use for refracting light. A triangular prism usually has 2 triangular bases with 3 rectangular sides.

The triangle shape in a prism symbolizes the three of us in a group. Although we only have only three person in our group which is the least member among the other groups in the class, we have our own ability and shining spot. Furthermore, triangle is being recognize as the most stable shape among all the other shapes in the world. Thus, the name PRISM carries our hope for unity and strength to work as a group.

As a refractive medium, when a light beam passes through a prism, the white light is bent and refracted. Due to difference of wavelength in the colors, different colors will refract in different angles as they pass through the prism. Thus, causing the dispersion of light where the white lights are separated into its component colors, which are red, orange, yellow, green, blue & violet. Hence, the ability of PRISM to disperse rainbow colors from the white light has closely related to our research theme, the LGBT community. Rainbow is a symbolism to the LGBT community. Therefore, we hope that this name, PRISM could bring the meaning of us willing to support and speak out for the LGBT community.

The first two lines are describing about a typical Friday night in 70s, where people will find a place to go, most probably a disco bar for a dance to get rid of boredom. The third and forth line are describing about the atmosphere in the disco bar, where they play the disco music for people to dance along. The last line is describing that the girl (the dancing queen) come not only for dancing, but also hoping to find a “king” (romantic partner a.k.a Mr. Right) there. The use of the word “king” is very suitable as it fits the dancing “queen” as a pair.

Verse 2

The first line describes that anyone there could be the girl’s partner. Thus, the girl does not deny her chances of meeting someone that might interest her in the disco bar. From line 2 to line 5, it is describing about the wonderful atmosphere in the disco bar that makes the girl feeling wanted to dance. For the last line, the word “chance”, might be indicating that any random guy (king) inviting the girl for a dance.

Chorus

See that girl, watch that scene, digging the dancing queen

For the first line of the chorus, it describes how wonderful and attractive the girl is until she became the spotlight for everyone. Watching her dancing is intoxicating that everyone sees
her as the Dancing Queen. The second line is describing about how the girl got deeply immersed in her dancing. The following lines are the repetition of the intro part.

In the first two line, the girl (dancing queen) was presented as a teaser, as she purposely teasing people around in looking for her king. She started a fire inside of those people but leaving them hanging when she could not find her king. For the following third and forth line, it showed that the girl did not come out with the goal of actually hooking up with someone, despite acknowledging that something romantic can potentially happen. The last two lines are actually the repetition in verse 2, connecting this verse with the following chorus.

Song Analysis

Overall, this song is describing a young attractive girl who came to a discotheque to dance, but unintentional caught everyone’s eyeballs and became the “dancing queen”. The word “you” used in the whole song is actually describing the girl, the dancing queen. In the verse parts, it is used to describing the girl’s action to hook up with some random guys in the dance floor, however that is not her main purpose to the discotheque. Her main purpose is stated in the chorus, where she came there just for a dance, to enjoy her Friday night time and to search for happiness.

This song cleverly uses 2 types of personal pronouns throughout the song, which is the second person pronoun, ”you” (the dancing queen), and third person pronoun, “em” (them, referring the other people in the discotheque) to describe the girl. The use of third person pronoun is still understandable, as to observe from third person’s perspective on how they look at the attractive girl, thus to show how attractive the girl is to the extend of becoming the dancing queen of the whole dancing floor. On the other hand, for the use of second person pronoun, the purpose of it is slightly vague. If we analyze it from the perspective of the singers (ABBA) or the song’s music video, we can assume that ABBA, who serves as the first person pronoun (I/we) wants to differentiate between the girl and the others, hence using the second person pronouns to show a sense of closeness with the girl (the target). Other reason about the use of second person pronoun from another reliable source is that it is used by the girl herself, to describe her past self.

Our group decided to choose this LGBT topic to present because all of us share the mutual goal, to support and love the LGBT community. Therefore, we decided to take this golden opportunity to conduct research on the LGBT community and its history, to further understand these people and their life stories. Throughout this journey, we have learned a lot and we really appreciate the LGBT community's courage to fight for their own rights and freedom. These lessons learnt will give us an open eye and heart to better understand and accept all the people around us, regardless of anything.
