The Australian perspective not only was different in the population at the time, but also changed over time. Initially, the Australian population was very fearful of the migrants. They were worried that the migrants would flood us and tarnish our nation. This was one of the justifications for the White Australia policy. Later on, as Vietnamese Refugee migration began, ending the White Australia policy, the Australian population, seeing the similarities they shared with the Vietnamese were happy to have these immigrants.

Additionally, due to the hard working nature of the Immigrants, Australians were happy to accept them into their culture, not fearing that they would be a burden on Australia. Further down the track, and into the modern day, the Australian perspective has started shifting back regarding Muslim immigrants. These views were reflective of those that the Vietnamese migrants initially experienced upon arrival. The SBS published 'The Immigration Nation' in 2011, comprising of multiple surveys and reports, classified the Australian migrant perspectives into 4 views: 'Room for More' (Favorable views towards immigration), 'On our terms' (Favorable view as long as they are going through right procedures), 'Fear of the Foreign' (Concern about the cultural differences) and 'Under No Circumstances' (No immigration at all). 'Under No Circumstances' made up almost a quarter of the Australian view, showing a shift back towards the pre-war White Australia views.

Over the years, Australian's have come to realisation that you can't call people wogs or dagos simply because of their race. We recognised that if migrants fit and don't act as a burden then they've earnt it - "We Appreciate our Migrants - If They Earn It".

A study conducted by The Immigration Nation Report and the Mackay Report research papers finds that more than 60 per cent of people agree Australia should be a multicultural society and that society is richer because of migrant influence. Controversially, it is said to believe that Australian's no longer see new migrants in the employment market. Therefore, demonstrating the many attitudes and values that have changed over the years (the Pendulum Effect).

From a migrants perspective, it is apparent that most migrants have this desire to 'fit in'. They want a job, they want acceptance and they appreciate what the country offers them

The initial perspectives on Vietnamese migrants was one of pure racism and disgust; the constant segregation and incessant bombardment of racial insults was the epitome of intolerant prejudice. For example, at the beginning of the article, the author states how Australians referred to migrants as wogs, dagos, slopes, slanty-eyeds, the yellows, the balts, the lebs, the curry-munchers and towel heads. In present day society, racial perspectives are still prevalent, however, a small minority opposed to a dominant ideology. After the Vietnamese Migrant Crisis in which Malcom Fraser announced that migrants are welcomed into Australia, Australian citizens finally accepted that foreigners would come to live there. However, Australians only subtly tolerated them and subliminally sought segregation and isolation from them. As time progressed and Australia's cultural diversity increased, it is stated in the text that 60% of people agreed Australia should be a multicultural society. Acceptance adapted into appreciation as more migrants offered opportunity and were viewed less as opposing competitors but as allies in the employment market. The vast majority of Australians are accepting of migrants, as long as they assimilate and adopt the Australian culture.
