Then the teacher takes away the balls and gives the child a whiteboard and has her draw dots on the numbers in place of the balls. Her parents become increasingly frustrated with her inability and confused as to what is wrong with her. They are educated on Dyscalculia and use special techniques to teach her the concepts. Children with Dyscalculia often struggle with things not related to math as well, such as telling their left from their right, and telling time on a non-digital clock, and when they’re older, driving. These children excel when they are taught using visual techniques, and in a group setting. I found it interesting that children with dyscalculia cannot distinguish the value of a number from the word. For example, in one of the videos on my project, an author talks about how she was working with a child who was asked what plus four equals nine without counting on her fingers. The child responded “could it be nine? No it couldn't, because five is much bigger than four, so that would equal much more than nine.” This shows that these children have normal thinking and processing patterns but they just cannot comprehend the normal sequencing of numbers. This disease is just as common as dyslexia, with 7% of the population suffering from it. However, we are far less educated on dyscalculia. In fact, we are an approximated 30 years behind what we know about dyslexia for dyscalculia. Working on this project has taught me to pay more attention to when a child is having trouble learning a concept. Sometimes it is just them being too young to understand, but other times if the problem persists there can be some internal problems going on that are stopping the child from exceeding in a certain area. Dyscalculia needs to be researched more so that children who have don’t feel isolated and intelligent.
