Sexism is the act of discrimination and unfairness because of gender. Women are most affected by this type of discrimination, things such as the wage gap where women are paid 19% less money than men and the glass ceiling where women are treated unfairly for promotions, raises, etc. Large occurrences of sexism are in the workplace, especially Hollywood.

B. Chronological/Sequential: Career Life of a Woman That Works for Hollywood.

Hello I am Isabella and this is the story of my career in Hollywood and how horrible it was. When I first started out as an actress when I was 29 this was what I was told by the director of the first movie I was in “if you don’t go on diet immediately you will be fired on the spot, for you are just bad looking.” I got comments like these my whole career, sadly I had to take the diet to stay in Hollywood, it was horrible but it was what had to be done. A year later I realized that there were barely any women, out of every 30 people only 2-3 were women. Then, two years later when I was 32 my friend was fired because she was just not good looking enough and had to go. After that, when I was 35 I was told to start saving up my money because once I turned 40 I wasn’t gonna look good and I was gonna make no money at all because I won’t be good enough either. Next, when I was 40 I started making much less money and nobody was accepting me into movies because I “didn’t have the physical characteristics.” Lastly when I was 45 I couldn’t take it, I was treated with so much disrespect, I was called grandma, I had to leave.

C. Causes and Effects: How Does Being a Woman Affect Their Job.

There are many ways that being a woman can affect how you are treated in the workspace and even how much money you make. There is something known as the wage gap in the workplace where a woman only makes 82% of what a man makes, the cause for this is frowned upon, it is just because they are a woman. This is an example of sexism that takes place in the workplace and affects a whole woman’s life because they might not be able to make enough money. Another large part of workplace sexism is a term known as the glass ceiling. This like the wage gap has no reason for it other than the person is a woman, the glass ceiling means that most of the time a woman can’t get up to a high profession simply because they are a woman and are looked at as “junior workers” that only belong in lower professions. One example of this was when a woman was on an elevator to get to her job and was told this, “Um, no honey. That’s for the executive offices. The interns are going to this floor.” She was a woman and was consequently insulted by someone saying they didn’t belong in the high ranks, just because she was a girl. 62% of men are managers as only 38% of women are managers, the cause for this is the glass ceiling, women being seen as junior workers, women having a disadvantage when people judge to see if they “deserve” or “earn” a higher rank. Also 35% of women even experience sexual harassment in their workspace, this leads to to it happening more often, and the sexism just gets worse and worse. 29% of women also think that their gender is an obstacle in the workplace, this is because it is, the wage gap and the glass ceiling are all terrible things in the workplace and should be stopped. More evidence of this problem is that there are protests in Switzerland all for women’s rights in the workplace. They decided to so this because they were treated badly in the workplace and it affected them, so they needed to do something about it. Sexism needs to stop now.

D. Problems and Solutions: Organizations Trying to Stomp on Workplace Sexism

Although there are still many problems with sexism in the workplace there are many companies/organizations that are trying to help find solutions to this. One foundation trying to help is the New Women New Yorkers Foundation. This was founded in 2014, it helps resolve sexism by taking in immigrated women and putting them into training, the training helps the women learn how to get a higher education or get their first good job. Since they started they have helped over 170 immigrant women. Another organization resolving sexismin the workplace is the Raiding HOPE organization. This organization was founded in 2008 and has trained women to face the challenges of sexism and helps them learn how to become financially independent. In the past 10 years Raising HOPE has helped 200 women (mostly single mothers) between the ages of 25 and 40 become financially independent. The Bottomless Closet Foundation is a Foundation that helps women at a disadvantage prepare for work. Founded in 1999 the Bottomless Closet Foundation is another organization trying to find a solution to sexism, it has helped 35,000 women and hopes to serve 2,400 this year. The last group on this list of amazing organizations trying to destroy the problem of workplace sexism is Girls Incorporated. Girls Incorporated helps young girls from ages 9-18 get inspired to be smart, strong, and bold and fight against sexism. This company helps the next generation of women say no to sexism and find a solution to the issue. It helps around 800 each year and has a high impact on 100 of the girls, although it wishes to have a high impact on 365 girls in the near future. All these organizations are helping to demolish the challenge of sexism and provide women the necessary tools to get rid of it.
