Students have developed a kind of learned helplessness - they think that learning = watching the lecturer talk, and that they can't do anything by themselves. We need to emphasise with them that master's level involves more encounters with authentic materials and practice - publications, data, discussions about what the evidence means, proposing ways of generating better data, predicting the outcome of an intervention, arguing about the right way to proceed. This is all that chunking comes down to, really. Where do we set these expectations, and make it clear that the chunks ARE the learning? I think this is a good topic for pre-sessional communication to the students; induction; the week 1 welcome video; and the first group tutorial in week 1.

Hi Fouzia, Good question. Like student outcomes, there is a concept called 'in-comes', what knowledge the students come to the course with? You can use the first 5 minutes of the class, to find out what the student incomes are, (they can unmute and shout-out the concepts). You can even get 1 or 2 to elaborate bit more, then as you churn out chunky bits, take a pause, relate your chunks to 1 or 2 Student in-comes and pose the question back to the student(s), 'Now, how does this new piece of information, relate to what you initially said' etc...

i disagree - i think timetabling independent study is incredibly helpful to the student, and furthermore, making it explicit to students what this independent study is 'for' and why it is scheduled can make them much more engaged and value it as integral to the learning. if this isn't emphasised, students will quickly drop this.

@Anonymous 2, yes, I agree that providing protected time can often help especially in the programmes offering part-time study options to busy students with full-time job and other commitments. If the study materials are only provided in the session (as Fouzia mentions), it becomes a synchronous 'Just-in-time learning'. This is of course different from the model of providing study materials well in advance and getting them to learn in their own time asynchronously.

Our modules are very small (2 weeks) with ICA preparation etc. I was thinking the lecturer could do a 10mins presentation on foundation of the lecture, and then a 10min on Q&A.

@ Anonymous 1: Regarding clinical/lab teaching, unfortunately there isn't a straight forward answer or perfect replacement. However, the following alternatives are suggested. Using 1) digital artefacts like pics/videos, if that will help achieve the learning outcome 2) simulations 3) synchronous remote participation like live online demonstration, 4) asynchronous participation by a nominated member from a group (by turns, due to limited numbers allowed in labs/clinics) and collective learning etc.
