when shadow emerges, measure the length of the shadow.

place the 30cm ruler at a right place.

measure the length of the shadow from the end to the 30cm ruler

then, the two triangles which have 30cm ruler and flag as the height become similar.

using that the ratio of the two legs are the same

(length of the shadow from the end to the 30cm ruler) : (length of the 30cm ruler)  

= (length of the shadow of the flag) : (the length of the flag)
