Rupi Kaur has two books out, the sun and her flowers is her second collection of poetry to be released after milk and honey. Her very first book. Rupi's collection of poetry is known for her non-capitalized letters and her usage of simplistic hand drawn pictures showcased throughout her books.

The climax of this book is very difficult to determine due to it being a collection of poetry but the book is separated by the stages of flower growth. I would make the assumption the climax is 'blooming' the very last section. This theme of poetry is dedicated to self-awareness to her worth and boosts of confidence compared to the entry poems.
"i will no longer
compare my path to others
-i refuse to do a disservice to my life" pg 200

The introduction of the collection of poetry connects to outlining of the book (wilting, falling, rooting, rising, blooming) and the title. Since the collection of poetry does not all connect to tell one story but as a symbol of a flower growth, this does not have an exposition. Rupi states "bees come for honey
flowers giggled as they undressed themselves
for the taking
the sun smiled -the second birth." this could also show a connection to the first book milk and honey.

I would recommend this book because the outline of the book and the corresponding poems follow perfectly with the title. The poems are also very simple but impactful. The metaphors Rupi uses show similarities between nature and human tactics are eye opening. The author's poems range from just sentences to paragraph, the variety in the book makes it very easy to use. Overall Rupi's style of writing makes this piece of work very enjoyable and pleasing to read.

My personal connection to this collection of work is Rupi's chapter 'rooting'. It is dedicated mostly to her refugee mom and the lessons she has learned from her. One poem that stook out to me was
"in a dream
i saw my mother
with the love of her life
and no children
it was the happiest i'd ever seen her
-what if" She is talking about how she thinks shes ruined her mother's life due to her birth at a young age and being a refugee. I can relate to this because my mother had me at young age and in my deep subconscious thought, I think of what if she didn't have me how would my mother thrive today.

I can connect this book to 'Sunflower' by Rex Orange County. Not only because the similarities in names but the song starts of solemn and the dependency of a relationship just like 'wilting' in the sun and her flowers, where Rupi discussed the aftermath of a breakup and dealing with the loss of dependency of a relationship. The song eventually works up to the chorus as upbeat, stating that
"sunflowers still grow at night
waiting for a minute till the sun's seen through my eyes"
which to me resembles the chapter 'blooming' in which Rupi realizes her self worth and doesn't need a relationship to be happy.

Conflict: internal
the conflict in the sun and her flowers is rupi's internal thought and her journey in valuing who she is and her stance on the world. This collection of poem resolves in Rupi honoring her roots and recognizing her self worth.
"there is
nothing left
to worry about
the sun and her flowers are here"

"i feel apprehensive
cause falling into you
means falling out of him and
i had not prepared for that
-forward" the sun and her flowers (kaur157)
this quote is important because it shows the authors progress in this collection.
"why do i do this
why do i punish my body
for being exactly as it's meant to be
i stop myself halfway through the regret
when i think of him and how
i'm too embarrassed to show him unless its clean" the sun and her flowers (kaur81)
I chose this quote because it shows the pressure of society and their view on body hair. This quote shows Rupi becoming self aware of certain expectations and not what needs to be done.

he sun and her flowers was easy to read but hard to connect each poem to create a story of it. Many poems were also one lined so you really had to think deeply about what it meant and what it contributed to the story.
