The extremely outrageous living conditions of the landfills is emphasised through descriptions of "you cannot believe human beings are allowed to work here, let alone live here" The theme of violating human rights is expressed in this quote and shows the setting is unacceptable, disgusting and inhumane. Its shown again in the quote "Behala is a huge, monstrous, filthy, steaming rubbish dump". The use of personification in the word "monstrous" implies the rubbish has evil intentions and confirms the negative connotations with this setting. Not only that, but the use of multiple adjectives emphasises how truly horrid it is.

The quote creates a sad tone, creating a sense of gloominess and unease in the reader. The description "dank and cold" contrasts sharply with the warm and cozy atmosphere of the home. "Bales of hay towers against the far wall under the ceiling of exposed beams.” shows us that Sora feels scared because of the use of "Towers". The old, worn rural setting creates unease in the reader and gives the sense of something being off. Prevously in the book, Sora describes her home as warm and cozy, after leaving there, she describes the barn as cold. This may the author foreshadowing.

Amir feels like he does not belong in Afghanistan anymore, as the guilt of his past washes over him. A quote that helps to envision this is "I stood outside the gates of my father's house, feeling like a stranger." This is the thought comes to Amir while he is visiting Afghanistan and is back in his childhood neighborhood. The reason that he feels like a stranger is because his memories from Afghanistan, before the Taliban, are ones that he chose to forget and that he detached himself from and coming back to see that it's in an uncared for condition, makes him feel the same regret he did 25 years ago.

"“Look! A stove! And real beds! With sheets and pillows!” And for a whole day, we only rested and got back our strength. "

This quote imbues the device of emotive language because it has exclamation marks in it. This quote also showed the dire living conditions which the prisoners were subject to. The very fact that they were excited about a bed, with sheets and pillows showed that they did not have these simple luxuries in the prisoner camp. This showed the shocking amount of dehumanization which the prisoners were subject to, as they were not even able to sleep on a bed, with sheets and pillows. They also mentioned that they rested and got back their strength. This is a good example of showing that the prisoners were used to being whipped, and that resting for simply one day was a sheer novelty for them. Life was obviously very hard for the prisoners of war in the concentration camps.

In the book “Book Thief”, Markus Zusak uses literary devices such as imagery to describe the gloomy mood of the setting. This can be seen in the quote “Usually it was like spillage-cold and heavy, slippery and grey”, describing the setting to be eerie and dull. This also reflects the main character’s mood, bored and hopeless, as she was sent to clean the doorstep by her foster mother. The word spillage may also give the idea of something that is dirty and nobody wants, similar to how Liesel may be feeling at this moment.

‘’My greatest fear was coming true: I would end up just like my father, another poor Malawian farmer digging the soil.’’

This quotation highlights William Kamkwamba's deep worry and determination. In Malawi, where opportunities are limited and poverty common, William shares his deepest fear: that he would live an empty life similar to that of his father, a hard-working farmer. William's strong desire to break out from the cycle of poverty and his commitment to choose a better route are perfectly captured in this quotation. It is a powerful symbol of his continuous quest for success over hardship, figure out how to live, and eventually have a beneficial influence on the world and his community.

The description of the Behala and how their human rights and privileges are how they are not suitable is shown early in the book when it says ‘’You Can Smell Behala Long before you see it’’ This could mean that the city has a horrible smell as you could see a city before you smell it. The size of this city and the badly treated city is shown as it says ‘’It must be about two hundred football pitches big, or maybe a thousand basketball courts’’ This quote shows how the city is massive but still able to be smelt before seen. The city has mountains and mountains of trash and covers the whole city with it saying ‘’one whole long world of steaming trash’’ This might be because of bad political issues leading to dangerous or uncared-for cities that eventually ended up getting trashed and left behind to rot.

A man in hiding, and yet he's surrounded by chandeliers.” This dramatic irony connotes the false appearances a man must keep up to survive in this harsh world. Moreover, the chandeliers highlight the fact that although he may have been denied privileges and luxury by the social elite, he uses those privileges to disguise himself from those who are looking for him.

This majestic and remarkable description of the cozy village is shown having "jagged peaks lining a curving river, with magic moss greening the banks". These sensory details suggest that it looks like a dream and that it is filled with flourishing nature. But after the Japanese attack, the townsfolk realized that it really was just a dream, and nothing more, and it was simply their imagination. This is because right after the war takes place the descriptions of beauty and elegance disappear as many others flee here to the village for refuge hoping to find peace. "We were a city of leftovers mixed together". This is the description of Suyuan's home village after the repeated attacks, this suggests that immigrants and refugees have come here and are all mixed up and jumbled up together, they are all from different cultures, different customs and heritage but they all have one thing in common which unites them together as a village: the hope for safety, and for things to return back the way they were.

Creeks where Hassan and I skipped stones all spring turned dry, and rickshaws stirred dust when they sputtered by. "

This quote communicates and expresses the picture of a dusty, dry, hazy setting hot in the summer. The comparison of the sun to a "branding iron searing the back of your neck" connotes heat and dryness, giving audiences a visual picture of a hot dry area where rain and water is scarce. This signals to audiences that as the "creeks where Hassan and I skipped stones all spring turned dry," there is a sense of foreboding and apprehensiveness as the weather changes. It symbolizes the main character Amir's melancholy as his relationship with Hassan "turns dry" just like the creek they used to play by. This phrase tells us that everything between them changes as Amir begins to disassociate himself with Hassan because of his regrets of not standing up for him, and that their relationship was different back in spring.
