"The reality is that we privilege people who look and act like us, and perceive those who don't as different and, frequently, inferior."

This quote made me truly think about how some people prejudge others who may not be like them. Sadly, people judge others without really getting to know them. It's important for future educators to not have this mentality and to have an open mind and heart for each and every student. I chose this picture because I believed it showed how people can ignore those who aren't like them.

"The work to become truly effective educators in urban schools requires a new approach to teaching that embraces the complexity of place, space, and their collective impact on the psyche of urban youth."

This quote helps set the tone of how important it is to create a comfortable classroom environment. Earning students' trust and catering to their needs will affect how the classroom environment will be. I believe it is extremely important to focus on the students and have a grasp of which way they learn best, as well as keep in mind their life outside of school! Make the classroom a safe haven for each and every student regardless of where they come from. I chose this picture because it shows how students can be themselves in a classroom, and be trusting of not only the teacher but their classmates.

Students can come from many types of backgrounds. Regardless of socio-economic status or life experiences, a child has the potential to do anything! Encouraging students is key and that is why I chose this photo. This picture discribes this quote, because people have the mentality that students from urban schools are dirty or poor. Students don't need cleaning up, they need guidance and love and not to be changed from who they are.

I chose this video to represent this quote because it shows students taking care of a student who did not have a snack. This video is just a small part of how students should treat one another. It's important for students to not only be supportive academically, but also help one another in life. Students being supportive in the classroom can have an impact on the lives of those within that classroom culture.

I picked this video to complement this quote because teachers need feedback from students and other colleagues to make improvements. Constructive feedback from students can benefit teachers and in return help the teacher to make necessary accommodations for success in the classroom.

Teaching is going to be hard, but it will be rewarding! This picture says "don't quit", but scribbled out to say "do it". Although the two teachers in this quote could have quit working at that school, they stayed so they could persevere and be better than they were!

Likewise, the teacher was being real with the students on the court. The teacher was getting to know the students outside of the classroom setting and was truly trying to build a relationship. Getting to know your students is so important and it's important to also go beyond what your call of duty may be.

“While many may not see what style has to do with teaching and learning, I argue that the art of teaching the non-indigenous requires a consideration of the power of art, dress, and other dimensions of their aesthetic” (Emdin, 2016, p. 167).

In chapter 9, Emdin discusses how a white teacher in an urban school could not understand or relate to a student who was eligible for free lunch, but still wore very nice clothes. Emdin argued that the teacher simply did not understand the student’s culture. People who are from a low income family, value the importance of dressing nice. Many people from these harsh back grounds simply want to make themselves look better off than they really are. I believe one of the main ways a teacher can truly connect with their students is if they understand the arts of their students’ cultures. For example, in this video a student remembers how his teacher wanted a specific type of sneakers. This student most likely remembered this, because the teacher was connected to the students’ culture. The students knew what type of shoes the teacher liked, because it was a type of shoe they liked as well. If you listen to the video, you can tell the teacher even talks similarly to how the students do. It is apparent that this teacher has a good understanding of his students’ culture, and also values it. It is almost like he is one of them. Therefore, in order to understand your students, and gain their trust and respect, a teacher must be able to relate to them culturally in some way.

In this quote it talks about how teachers may be accused of being off task if they play games such as jeopardy outside of review or before big tests. In this section of the book it explains how some teachers play jeopardy only when it's to review for a standardized exam or major test. I believe it's important to get your students engaged in class and if playing educational games will help, teachers should have the right to it. I chose this video for this quote because it shows this class playing jeopardy and the students are being active learners. This video correlates with how the classroom should be in order to engage the students.

In this quote it talks about the hip hop battle, and how the younger children were introduced to how the hip hop battle runs by watching it take place and then imitating it. When I read this quote it made me think of how students pick up on things they see and hear. If students are seeing and hearing positive things, they are more likely to pick up those mannerisms. I chose this picture to go with this quote because older members of society will have an impact on the younger members, whether that is good or bad. This picture shows a mom and her child both talking on the phone, the child saw the mother do this and so the child copied. As teachers, we're role models and should always strive to model a positive and encouraging behavior for our students.
